Toronto Blue Jays could be a fit for Danny Coulombe
The Boston Red Sox are reportedly eyeing another left-handed pitcher to add to their bullpen, according to a recent report by MassLive.com’s Sean McAdam:
“There remains a handful of veteran lefty relievers still available on the free agent market, including Jalen Beeks, Danny Coulombe, Colin Poche and Joey Lucchesi. Wilson, meanwhile, is said to be leaning toward retirement.”
The Red Sox internal lefty options on Boston’s depth chart include: Aroldis Chapman (closer), Jovani Moran, and Tyler Samaniego.
Red Sox Should Sign Danny Coulombe in MLB Free Agency
MLB free agency is still technically underway, as there are a handful of veterans on the market who are still looking for a new team ahead of the 2026 season. Danny Coulombe is one of those names.
Coulombe posted a 2.30 ERA last year with the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers over 43 total innings. His time with Texas, where he was traded at the trade deadline, was much less productive than the first half of the 2025 season. Coulombe had a very attractive 1.16 ERA over the 31 innings of the ’25 campaign with the Twins, which ultimately led to him being dealt.
The Boston Red Sox should consider signing Danny Coulombe before Opening Day to cap off their offseason.
He is a 36-year-old southpaw with not much overpowering stuff, but he’s able to miss barrels and keep the ball in the yard.
MLBTradeRumors.com’s Nick Deeds wrote more on why the Red Sox want to add another southpaw:

“Sensible as it would be for the team to look to add more lefty bullpen help, the Red Sox seem committed to doing so only on their terms. McAdam notes that the club has made clear neither of the team’s top left-handed pitching prospects, Payton Tolle and Connely Early, will be considered for moves into the big league bullpen.”
Will the Red Sox Add Another Lefty?
While Danny Coulombe is likely the best left-handed pitcher available in MLB free agency, he might be seeking a major league contract due to last year’s production and his age.
Boston, however, might be looking to either make a small trade with another team or make a waiver claim for a southpaw that the Red Sox don’t have to pay that much. It’s important to note the Red Sox have a really deep pitching staff, and they don’t want to dip into that depth at this point in the offseason.
It will be interesting to see what they do to address this issue in the final month of the MLB regular season, but one thing that is true is that the Red Sox have a plethora of right-handed bullpen options like Garrett Whitlock, Greg Weissert, Justin Slaten, and Zack Kelly.
