Kevin Alcntara Stuns Cubs With Attitude Shift at Spring Training

The Chicago Cubs are in an intriguing position with their young outfield prospect, Kevin Alcántara. With an additional option year now secured, the team has the flexibility to let him continue refining his skills at Triple-A Iowa. However, there’s also a chance he could make the Opening Day roster.

Alcántara is in the mix for the role of fourth outfielder, competing with Justin Dean, Chas McCormick, and Dylan Carlson. While McCormick or Carlson might have the edge, the Cubs’ plans could shift as spring training unfolds and the Cactus League games begin. Alcántara has been making a strong impression since his brief stint with the team last season, both on and off the field.

Manager Craig Counsell praised Alcántara’s preparation and execution, noting his sporadic but impactful contributions. Alcántara spent most of 2025 in Iowa, posting a .266/.349/.470 slash line, though his strikeout rate was nearly 30 percent. Despite the swing-and-miss in his game, his defensive prowess and base-running skills make him a promising asset for the Cubs’ future.

Alcántara himself feels a strong connection to the team, likening it to a family. He expressed gratitude for Counsell’s belief in him and is committed to seizing any opportunity to contribute to the team’s success.

With Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki set to enter free agency this fall, the Cubs might look to Alcántara as a potential solution for their outfield needs. If he can show continued progress at the plate, Alcántara could play a significant role in the team’s plans for 2026 and beyond.
