Marcus Semien Stuns Fans With Departure From Texas Rangers

The offseason brought significant changes for the Texas Rangers, as they decided to part ways with Gold Glove second baseman Marcus Semien. After a stellar 2023 season that culminated in a World Series win, Semien’s performance dipped, recording his lowest WAR since 2020. With the Rangers looking to trim payroll, Semien’s $26 million salary became a focal point.

While the move appeared primarily financial, whispers of underlying tensions between Semien and fellow star infielder Corey Seager surfaced. MLB insiders suggested that the Rangers faced a choice, and ultimately, they chose to keep Seager.

The trade sent Semien to the New York Mets, a move that sparked discussion among league executives. One AL executive remarked, “You have to buy into the team first.

If not, you’re going to be gone.” Another added, “The Rangers needed to get him out of there.

It was clear something had to change, and Semien was the one to go.”

Despite the rumors, Seager addressed the situation at spring training, dismissing any notion of discord. “That’s just all speculation.

We had a fine relationship. We both respect each other,” Seager clarified.

“We were professional and knew how to accomplish our goals. We did that in ’23.”

Ultimately, the Rangers’ decision to trade Semien for outfielder Brandon Nimmo was a strategic move to maintain offensive strength. By keeping Seager, Texas preserved one of their lineup’s most productive bats, ensuring they remain competitive in the seasons ahead.
