Oli Marmol Challenges Chaim Bloom’s Bold Vision for the Cardinals Rebuild

When Chaim Bloom stepped in as the head honcho for the St. Louis Cardinals, he had a clear vision: dismantle and rebuild. Meanwhile, for Cardinals manager Oli Marmol, the mission is straightforward and perennial-maximize wins with the squad he’s got.

Marmol is realistic; he knows 2026 might not be a banner year for victories. In a chat on 101 ESPN, he expressed appreciation for Bloom’s strategic approach to the franchise. Yet, there’s a particular offseason goal of Bloom’s that Marmol doesn’t fully share.

The buzz around adding a veteran right-handed bat to guide the younger players isn’t a priority for Marmol. While Bloom has been vocal about acquiring a seasoned right-handed outfielder to balance the left-leaning lineup and mentor emerging talent, Marmol isn’t convinced it’s essential for clubhouse leadership.

Discussions have swirled around potential candidates like former Cardinals Randal Grichuk and Tommy Pham, as well as Pittsburgh Pirates legend Andrew McCutchen. Some suggest McCutchen’s leadership would be a boon for the Cardinals. However, even without veterans like Brendan Donovan, Nolan Arenado, and Sonny Gray, Marmol feels good about the chemistry brewing in the clubhouse.

“I think leadership will be a collective effort,” Marmol shared. “These guys will lead in their own ways, staying true to themselves, holding each other accountable, and competing as they’re accustomed to in St.

Louis. It’s already taking shape.”

Marmol spotlighted Masyn Winn as a rising leader. Entering his third full season, the 24-year-old is already showing maturity and influence in the clubhouse.

“Winn is starting to see beyond himself, engaging in clubhouse conversations. His awareness and leadership potential are really encouraging,” Marmol noted.

As options for a right-handed bat dwindle, the Cardinals might stick with their current lineup for 2026. This doesn’t faze Marmol. Despite the team’s youth, he’s confident in their cohesion and believes leadership and accountability will naturally develop among the players.
