BREAKING: Andrew Painter Heads Another Top Prospect List

If you don’t already subscribe to Baseball Prospectus (BP), you probably should. Today they put out their preseason Top 20 Phillies Prospects for 2025. The extremely knowledgeable Jarrett Seidler authored the list along with insight from BP Staff. The Top 10 isn’t all that surprising, though the order may vary based on how you view floors and ceilings.

  1. Andrew Painter, RHP
  2. Aidan Miller, SS
  3. Moisés Chace, RHP
  4. Eduardo Tait, C
  5. Starlyn Caba, SS
  6. Justin Crawford, OF
  7. Gabriel Rincones, OF
  8. Mavis Graves, LHP
  9. Dante Nori, OF
  10. Griffin Burkholder, OF

The placement of Moisés Chace probably has your attention after the obvious 1-2 of Painter and Miller. Chace came over in the Gregory Soto trade (that also netted P Seth Johnson) and the Phillies may have absolutely fleeced Baltimore. Chace finished 2024 (across two levels and three teams) with 124 strikeouts to 40 walks in 80.1 innings. More impressively he seemed to cut down on the free passes once joining the Phillies as he struck out 48 to just 10 walks in albeit a smaller sample size (27.4 IP). Jarrett implies that while the ceiling may potentially be high, Chace’s placement in the ranking may more indicative of the system rather than his status.

Jarrett explained his rationale in his write-ups, but the Phillies used a much different approach in their scouting/drafting than what current modern front office’s currently employ. Take that from what you will as Aidan Miller was part of this strategy, as was Dante Nori and Griffin Burkholder. The Justin Crawford outlook isn’t pretty, but I personally remain a bit higher on him than Tait and Caba simply because I think there is a higher floor with less extreme variances.

Overall, the system is very 1-2 top-heavy with some high to extreme variances on future MLB success. It really is a phenomenal read and evaluation of the Phillies prospects and system. If you want to learn more about 1-10, see who is 11-20, and those who just missed, please be sure to subscribe to BP (a highly recommended buy for baseball fans).
