In a move that would send shockwaves through the NFL, the Buffalo Bills could be on the verge of landing one of the league’s most dominant pass rushers. As the Pittsburgh Steelers navigate a new era under head coach Mike McCarthy, the future of superstar T.J. Watt has become the hottest topic in Pittsburgh. What if the answer involves shipping the future Hall of Famer to Western New York?
The Steelers are in transition mode after parting ways with longtime head coach Mike Tomlin and bringing in Mike McCarthy. While the roster still has talent, they’re not true contenders yet. One of the toughest decisions facing the new regime is what to do with Watt, who turns 32 in October 2026.
Watt signed a massive three-year, $123 million extension in 2025, carrying roughly $42 million cap hits in both 2026 and 2027. The deal includes an easy out after the 2027 season, but keeping a 32-year-old edge rusher at that price tag raises questions about value versus production.
Insider Buzz Ignites Trade Talk
Steelers insiders have fueled the fire in recent days. Ray Fittipaldo, a respected voice on all things black and gold, stated that the most Pittsburgh could realistically get for Watt this offseason is a second-round pick. Nick Farabaugh went even further, openly advocating that the Steelers should trade him to accelerate their rebuild.
Beat writer Jarrett Bailey took it a step further, publishing his top-five potential landing spots for Watt:
Several of those options have major roadblocks. The Cowboys just moved on from Micah Parsons to avoid a huge contract and may not want another aging edge. Washington lacks a 2026 second-round pick. Green Bay recently handed out a massive deal to another star pass rusher. San Francisco invested a first-round pick in Mykel Williams and expects Nick Bosa back healthy.
That leaves the Buffalo Bills as the most intriguing — and perhaps most logical — destination.

The Bills are also entering a new chapter. After firing Sean McDermott, they promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to head coach in late January 2026. Brady brings fresh energy and a mandate to fix a defense that has struggled to reach elite levels despite strong regular-season performances.
Buffalo’s pass rush has been a consistent weakness in recent postseasons. They took a big swing on an aging edge rusher before when they signed Von Miller in 2022 — a move that flashed brilliance before the ACL injury. General manager Brandon Beane knows he needs proven, high-level talent now to support Josh Allen and give this team another Super Bowl window.
Pairing T.J. Watt with Greg Rousseau would create a terrifying edge duo. Rousseau has developed into an elite run defender, but he hasn’t yet become a consistent double-digit sack artist. Watt, even at 32, still possesses elite burst, hand usage, and football IQ that could elevate everyone around him. Adding Michael Hoecht as a rotational piece would give Buffalo one of the most versatile and productive edge groups in the AFC.
The interior is already respectable with Ed Oliver and rising talent like Deone Walker. A dominant bookend opposite Rousseau could transform the entire defensive front into a legitimate top-tier unit.
Here’s the biggest hurdle: the Bills are currently projected around $9 million over the cap for 2026. Absorbing Watt’s $42 million cap hit would require creative maneuvering — restructures on Josh Allen, Spencer Brown, or other key pieces, plus potential cuts or post-June 1 designations.
It’s not impossible. Beane has shown he can navigate tight cap situations, and the rising salary cap (projected between $301M–$305M) gives some breathing room. If the Bills believe Watt can deliver 10–12 sacks and elevate the defense to championship level, they’ll find a way to make the math work.
From Pittsburgh’s side, a second-round pick in return would provide valuable draft capital as they rebuild around younger talent. Trading Watt early in the offseason would also create significant cap relief (roughly $32 million in savings after accounting for dead money).
There’s something about T.J.: ‘Intangible quality’ elevates Watt to different level in Steelers lore | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
For the Bills, this move screams “all-in.” It gives Brady a proven superstar to build his defense around and sends a clear message to the locker room — and the entire AFC — that Buffalo refuses to accept mediocrity.

For the Steelers, it’s a pragmatic step in a painful but necessary rebuild. Saying goodbye to a franchise icon like T.J. Watt would hurt, but acquiring a high draft pick and freeing up massive cap space could set them up for long-term success under McCarthy.
Is this proposal likely? The rumors are real, the fit is excellent, and both teams have motivation. Whether it actually happens remains to be seen — but in an NFL offseason full of surprises, a T.J. Watt trade to Buffalo would be one of the biggest bombshells imaginable.
