Longtime NFL Quarterback Could Be on Packers' QB Coaching Radar

The Green Bay Packers are in the market for a new quarterbacks coach after the departure of Sean Mannion, who is now the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. As coach Matt LaFleur looks to fill the role, one name has emerged as a potential candidate: Matt Schaub.

According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Schaub, a two-time Pro Bowler, has begun to receive interest in coaching roles, including possibly with the Packers. While there’s no official confirmation that the Packers are pursuing him, the prospect of Schaub joining the coaching staff is intriguing given his past experience working with LaFleur.

A Strong Connection to Matt LaFleur

Schaub, who played 17 seasons in the NFL, has a strong connection to LaFleur. The two worked together during LaFleur’s time with the Houston Texans from 2008 to 2009 and again during LaFleur’s tenure as the quarterbacks coach with the Atlanta Falcons in 2016. In fact, LaFleur has spoken highly of Schaub in the past, noting that his experience and ability to excel within the offensive system made him a valuable asset for the Falcons’ quarterback Matt Ryan.

In 2016, LaFleur told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “Not only has he played in the system, he’s played at a pretty high level in our system. It’s just another voice, another set of eyes for Matt [Ryan] to lean on.”

Schaub’s familiarity with LaFleur’s system and his understanding of what it takes to succeed at the NFL level could make him an excellent fit as Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach.

Schaub’s Playing Career

Matt Schaub’s playing career was marked by consistency and success. After being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft, Schaub spent three seasons as a backup before being traded to the Houston Texans. Over the next seven seasons, Schaub became a cornerstone for the Texans, earning two Pro Bowl selections and leading the team to its first-ever winning record in franchise history.

During his time with the Texans, Schaub posted impressive numbers, including leading the NFL with 4,770 passing yards in 2009, and threw for 124 touchdown passes over his career. Schaub’s 2013 season with the Texans set an NFL record for the most consecutive games with a pick-six, but his leadership and work ethic were never in question. After stints with the Oakland Raiders, Baltimore Ravens, and Atlanta Falcons, Schaub retired after the 2020 season, finishing his career with 25,467 yards and 136 touchdowns in 155 games.

Schaub’s Transition to Coaching

Since retiring, Schaub has stayed involved in the game, first serving as an analyst for the Atlanta Falcons’ coaching staff in 2023, and more recently as a radio analyst at his alma mater, Virginia. Schaub’s playing career, marked by resilience and high-level performance, along with his involvement in mentoring younger players during his career, makes him an attractive candidate for coaching. Schaub has often spoken about how his experiences, including dealing with injuries and criticism, shaped his perspective on the game. This mindset could translate well into coaching, where understanding both the mental and physical demands of the game is crucial.

In 2025, Schaub even floated the idea of becoming the executive director of the NFL Players Association, advocating for a more player-driven league. His vision to empower players and bring about positive change in the league reflects his leadership qualities.

Other Candidates for Packers QB Coach

While Schaub’s name is now linked to the Packers, there are also other candidates being considered for the position. Connor Senger, a former walk-on quarterback at Wisconsin and a fast-rising coach, has reportedly interviewed for the role. Senger, who has spent the last three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals as a passing-game specialist, has been linked to other roles as well, including offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears.

The Packers also have some in-house candidates for the position. Nathaniel Hackett, who is now the offensive coordinator for the Cardinals under LaFleur’s brother, Mike LaFleur, has coaching experience that could be leveraged in this role. Luke Getsy, a former quarterbacks coach for the Packers from 2019 to 2021, is another potential candidate. Getsy has since served as the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears and the Las Vegas Raiders, and his familiarity with Green Bay’s system could make him a strong contender.

What’s Next for the Packers’ QB Coach Search?

With Matt Schaub now a name to watch in the Packers’ coaching search, the team’s front office and LaFleur will likely continue evaluating the best possible options. Schaub’s experience with LaFleur’s offensive system and his background as a highly skilled quarterback make him a compelling choice to help develop Green Bay’s next generation of quarterbacks.

Longtime NFL quarterback could be on Packers' QB coaching radar

As the Packers work to bolster their coaching staff, Schaub could provide the mentorship needed to help quarterback Jordan Love thrive in his first full season as the team’s starter. Green Bay fans will be watching closely to see how this search plays out and whether Schaub’s name will ultimately be attached to the Packers in 2026.
