Phillies Could Land $189M Two-Time All-Star as Part of Huge Offseason Makeover

The Philadelphia Phillies are fresh off posting a 95-67 record and winning the National League East for the first time since 2011. But after a premature postseason exit, the roster could undergo a significant overhaul.

Will these changes lead to Houston Astros slugger Alex Bregman landing in the City of Brotherly Love? President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said he’d be open-minded when it came to improving his roster for 2025. “I mean, the reality is, we have a lot of good players,” he said on Oct. 15, via MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. “I think we just have to be open-minded to exploring what’s out there for us, talk to some clubs and see what ends up happening. That process hasn’t started. Sometimes you trade good players for good players.”

One area of the roster that seems destined for change is third base.

Alec Bohm drove in a career-high 97 runs and earned his first All-Star Game selection in 2024. However, he struggled in the NLDS against the New York Mets, posting a .220 OPS in 14 plate appearances.

He’s been the subject of trade rumors this winter, which would leave a hole at the hot corner for Philly. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer views the Phillies as a potential fit for Bregman via free agency. He also named the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers as possible landing spots for the two-time All-Star. Swapping Bohm for Bregman seems like a no-brainer for the Phillies, who will enter 2025 with high expectations. Bregman is a two-time champion and has racked up 99 games worth of playoff experience since debuting in 2016.

Signing him won’t be cheap — The Athletic’s Tim Britton is projecting a seven-year, $189 million contract for the 30-year-old. However, that’s likely a price the Phillies would happily pay if it meant hoisting the World Series trophy for the first time since 2008.
