NFL Rumors: Brock Purdy Gets $17M Update on Offense as Brandon Aiyuk Cut Decision Confirmed
By Aryan Mamtani
The San Francisco 49ers had a season marked by constant injury interruptions, but they still managed to push through. However, there was one area of the team that seemed to struggle despite the efforts: the wide receiver room. With Brandon Aiyuk now gone, Kendrick Bourne and Skyy Moore both heading toward unrestricted free agency, and other significant gaps, the 49ers find themselves in desperate need of help at wide receiver.
The Deebo Samuel Reunion Rumor
One name circulating in the rumor mill as a potential solution for the 49ers’ receiving corps is a familiar one: Deebo Samuel. Samuel, who became a key part of the 49ers’ offense in his early years, is now a free agent after spending some time with the Washington Commanders. There’s speculation that San Francisco might consider bringing Samuel back, especially as the Commanders themselves are still deliberating whether to re-sign him.
Deebo Samuel has a long history with the 49ers, and his presence in the Bay Area could immediately stabilize their wide receiver group. The 49ers are familiar with Samuel’s unique skill set and versatility, which could provide Brock Purdy and the rest of the offense with the added firepower they need to take things to the next level.
However, there’s one key issue standing in the way: Samuel’s durability. 21 injuries over his career raise concerns about his ability to stay healthy over a full season. His contract, which guarantees $17 million for the 2025 season after a restructuring by Washington, also raises questions. Would the 49ers be willing to take on such a high-risk player at that price, given their own salary cap constraints and recent injury struggles?
The Commanders could be inclined to try again with Samuel, but they likely won’t be offering him the same kind of contract as last season, given their limited cap space. The 49ers, already dealing with injury issues, might be hesitant to add another high-risk player, even if it could boost their offensive output.
Brandon Aiyuk’s Departure and the Wide Receiver Void
The most significant change to the 49ers’ wide receiver room this offseason is the departure of Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk, who was originally signed to a four-year, $120 million extension in August 2024, has been a part of San Francisco’s plans long-term. However, after a series of unfortunate events, including injuries and lack of participation, Aiyuk’s time with the team has come to a bitter end.
General Manager John Lynch confirmed the inevitable after the 49ers’ loss to the Seahawks, stating that Aiyuk had played his last game for the team:
“I think it’s safe to say he’s played his last snap with the 49ers.”
Aiyuk’s abrupt departure started with a torn ACL and meniscus in 2024, which ended his season prematurely. When the 49ers voided the $27 million in guaranteed salary for 2026, it became clear that a future with the team was no longer feasible. Aiyuk’s injuries and his lack of availability meant that the 49ers could no longer rely on him as their primary vertical threat, and they ultimately decided to cut ties.
This move, while freeing up some cap space, has left the 49ers’ wide receiver group extremely thin. With Aiyuk gone, and Jauan Jennings also heading toward free agency, Kyle Shanahan faces the daunting task of filling a void that has left the 49ers’ offense looking vulnerable.
The Lack of Depth at Wide Receiver
As of now, the 49ers have very little depth at wide receiver. Ricky Pearsall, the 2024 first-round pick, didn’t make much of an impact, as he struggled with injuries and appeared in only nine games. Other options like Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins, Malik Turner, and Junior Bergen have potential but aren’t nearly enough to help the team compete at the highest level. Especially for an offense that thrives on spacing and timing, this lack of depth is a real concern heading into the 2026 season.
The 49ers offense needs someone who can take the pressure off Purdy, provide a true deep threat, and stretch defenses. Without a viable vertical option, the passing game could become too predictable, and the team would struggle to replicate their offensive success from previous seasons.
What’s Next for the 49ers?
With the need for a deep threat in the 49ers’ offense more pressing than ever, the question remains: will Deebo Samuel be the answer? The familiarity and his unique playing style could make him a great fit, but the 49ers’ front office will need to weigh the risk of his health and his hefty price tag.
If Samuel is not the solution, the 49ers will likely have to explore other options, whether through free agency or the NFL Draft. Purdy needs reliable weapons to work with if he’s going to continue his development and lead the 49ers back to the postseason.
The 49ers have the foundation of a strong team, but their wide receiver room is now in a precarious position. Adding a proven player with the ability to stretch the field and provide consistency could be the difference between a successful season and falling short of their championship aspirations.
As Brock Purdy prepares for another season with high expectations, the 49ers have to find a way to address their receiver depth. Whether it’s a reunion with Deebo Samuel or another acquisition, the success of their offense will depend heavily on the decisions they make in the coming months.
