‘Spring is on the Way’: Red Sox Equipment Truck Stops by Polar Park En Route to Florida
Story by Worcester Telegram & Gazette
Baseball season is finally on the horizon, and fans of the Boston Red Sox are buzzing with excitement as the Spring Training equipment truck makes its way to Florida. On February 2, the truck carrying most of the team’s gear departed from Fenway Park just after noon, making its way to Polar Park in Worcester. The truck’s journey marks the first sign of spring for Red Sox fans, a beloved tradition that fans eagerly await every year.
After leaving Worcester at approximately 1:30 p.m., the truck, which is adorned with a JetBlue plane and the Red Sox logo, set off on a nearly 1,435-mile journey to JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Florida, the Red Sox’s Spring Training home. This truck, loaded with thousands of baseballs, bats, jerseys, and other essentials, signals the beginning of spring training preparations, an event that holds special significance for Red Sox fans.
The Tradition of ‘Truck Day’
Since 2003, Truck Day has become a Boston Red Sox tradition, and it is the first indication that the spring training season is fast approaching. This annual event is celebrated by both fans and team staff, signaling the official start of the preseason preparations as the team heads south for their spring training.
In a heartwarming moment during a brief stop at Polar Park, the home of the Worcester Red Sox (WooSox), WooSox President Dr. Charles Steinberg presented Ben Leiva, the driver of the Red Sox’s Spring Training equipment truck, with a gift basket filled with uniquely Worcester items. The stop at Polar Park was met with cheers and excitement from the fans, who were eager to send off the truck and wish the team well as they made their way to Florida.
As Steinberg put it in a press release:
“Our recent winter weather has us longing for bats and balls and grass and dirt, and the imagery of warm breezes rather than New England freezes. While many fortunate fans will be flying JetBlue nonstop from Worcester to Fort Myers to see the Red Sox practice in person at JetBlue Park at Fenway South, many of us will find comfort in the photos and vivid videos that promise us that spring is on the way.”
Inside the 53-Foot Truck: What’s on Board?
Packed to the brim with the necessary tools of the trade, the 53-foot truck that left Fenway Park carries an impressive amount of gear. This year’s shipment includes 20,400 baseballs, 1,100 bats, 200 pairs of batting gloves, 320 batting practice tops, 160 white game jerseys, and 300 pairs of pants. That’s just the beginning. The truck also holds 400 shirts, 400 pairs of socks, 20 cases of bubblegum, and 60 cases of sunflower seeds.
As the truck makes its way to Florida, fans know that Spring Training is getting closer, with Red Sox pitchers and catchers scheduled to conduct their first workout on February 10. The first full-squad workout is set for February 15. It’s clear that spring training is on the minds of every Red Sox fan, and the truck’s departure is a reminder that the 2026 season is fast approaching.
