NEW YORK YANKEES ENTER 2026 SEASON WITH EXPECTATIONS DESPITE QUIET OFFSEASON
The New York Yankees have had a relatively quiet offseason, with general manager Brian Cashman making some key moves but no major splashy acquisitions. The most notable additions include the re-signing of Cody Bellinger, a trade for Ryan Weathers, and Trent Grisham accepting the team’s qualifying offer. However, these moves, while important, haven’t shifted the team’s trajectory in a significant way.
After a strong 2024 season that saw the Yankees reach the World Series, the team faced a tough setback in 2025, falling to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series. With high hopes for a bounce-back in 2026, the Yankees are looking to make a deep run in the playoffs and possibly secure another World Series appearance.
YANKEES REMAIN A CONTENDER DESPITE A QUIET OFFSEASON
Despite the lack of big moves, MLB Network Radio’s Jeff Joyce remains optimistic about the Yankees’ potential. Joyce believes that with Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón healthy, the Yankees could have their best rotation in years, especially in terms of postseason potential. “I know that everyone’s down on the Yankees, but going into this season, if Cole and Rodón come back healthy, they’ve probably got the best rotation they’ve had in a while,” Joyce said in a video posted on MLB Network Radio on January 31.
He also highlighted the strength of the Yankees lineup, pointing out that the team has more pieces around Aaron Judge than in previous seasons. However, Joyce did express some concerns about the left side of the infield, suggesting that the team may still need to add one more bat to truly round out the roster.
INJURY UPDATES ON COLE AND RODÓN
Regarding Cole and Rodón, Brian Cashman provided updates on their rehab protocols during a January 28 media session. Rodón is expected to start the season on the injured list, with a projected return around April or May, while Cole, coming off Tommy John surgery in 2025, is expected back in late May or early June. Clarke Schmidt, also recovering from Tommy John surgery, could return later in the season.
Despite the injuries, Cashman emphasized that both pitchers are highly competitive and eager to get back on the mound as soon as possible. “You’ve got to try to slow them down and protect them from themselves because they always want to do more sooner than later,” Cashman said, acknowledging their intense drive to perform.
JAZZ CHISHOLM JR. WEIGHS IN ON THE YANKEES’ OFFSEASON

Amidst a quiet offseason, Jazz Chisholm Jr. shared his thoughts on the Yankees’ chances heading into the 2026 season. The Miami Marlins star expressed confidence in the Yankees, pointing out their strong playoff track record over the past few years. “I think it was fine,” Chisholm said. “For me, I thought we made it to the playoffs back-to-back years. Haven’t delivered to the final blow, but I feel like, at the same time, this team is really good, really confident in this team, and we trust each other a lot to go to the playoffs and go win it.”
Chisholm’s words reflect the confidence that still surrounds the Yankees despite the lack of dramatic moves this offseason. While they haven’t yet clinched a World Series title in recent years, the team has remained competitive and continues to believe in its ability to contend.
LOOKING AHEAD TO THE 2026 SEASON
As spring training approaches, the Yankees enter the season with high expectations despite a quiet offseason. The return of Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón, alongside the continued strength of Aaron Judge and the lineup, gives New York a solid foundation. However, questions about the team’s infield and potential additions linger.
With a promising rotation, a potent lineup, and a sense of urgency after their 2025 postseason disappointment, the Yankees are poised for another playoff push in 2026. The coming months will determine if they can add the final pieces needed to truly challenge for the World Series.
