‘THERE IS STILL HOPE’: CHIEFS’ CHEER ALUMNI STAYS POSITIVE AMID STAGE 4 CANCER DIAGNOSIS

‘There is still hope.’ Chiefs’ Cheer Alumni stays positive amid stage 4 cancer diagnosis

In the face of overwhelming adversity, Sabrina Dotson, a former Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleader, has become an incredible example of strength, resilience, and optimism as she bravely battles stage 4 cancer. Despite a devastating diagnosis, Dotson remains focused on her journey, determined to inspire others and continue living life to its fullest. She recently sat down with KCTV5+ to share her personal story, opening up about her health struggles, the support she’s received from her family and friends, and the message of hope she continues to carry with her every day.

A Dream Come True with the Chiefs
Dotson’s time as a Chiefs Cheerleader was, in her own words, “a dream come true.” She joined the Kansas City Chiefs cheerleading squad in 2013 and spent three incredible seasons with the team until 2015. The experience allowed her to not only perform at the iconic Arrowhead Stadium but also to become part of a tight-knit community of cheerleaders and Chiefs fans. “It was a dream come true,” she reminisced. “Being on the field with the team and representing the Chiefs was one of the best times of my life.”

Even after her time as a cheerleader ended, Dotson remained a proud member of the Chiefs family. That connection has remained strong, particularly as she now faces the challenge of her life. Despite no longer being on the field, the love and camaraderie she shared with her cheer sisters continue to provide her with comfort and strength in this difficult time.

The Battle with Cancer Begins
In November 2024, Sabrina was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, a form of cancer that had already spread to her liver and bones by the time it was detected. “By the time we found that I had breast cancer, it had already spread to my liver and my bones,” Dotson shared, her voice reflecting the gravity of the situation.

However, Dotson hasn’t allowed her diagnosis to define her. She remains determined to keep pushing forward, finding strength in the love and support of her family and community. “There were moments when I felt overwhelmed,” she admitted. “But my family, friends, and even my Chiefs family have been such a huge part of my strength. They have been by my side every step of the way, and that’s what keeps me going.”

Despite the odds, Dotson’s focus remains on living each day with a positive outlook, emphasizing the importance of hope in her fight against the disease. “Even though the diagnosis was difficult, I know I’m not alone,” she said. “There is still hope. Every day is a chance to fight and make a difference. And I’m not giving up.”

Incredible Support from Family, Friends, and Chiefs’ Cheer Sisters
One of the things that has helped Dotson the most in her battle is the strong support system she has built over the years. Her husband and two young children have been her constant sources of encouragement, helping her navigate the physical and emotional challenges that come with fighting cancer.

“It would be really difficult to go on this journey without them,” Dotson said, reflecting on the deep connection she shares with her family. “Their support means everything to me. They are the reason I continue to fight each and every day.”

In addition to her immediate family, Dotson has been overwhelmed by the support from her Chiefs Cheerleading sisters and the entire Kansas City community. The camaraderie and love she continues to receive from those close to her have been invaluable. “When you’re going through something like this, having a community that truly cares about you is everything,” she explained. “The Chiefs family has always had my back, and I’m grateful for that every day.”

A Crucial Catch Honoree at Arrowhead Stadium
Dotson’s courage was recognized during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Crucial Catch game on October 19, 2025, when she was honored as a Crucial Catch honoree at Arrowhead Stadium. This moment marked a major milestone for Dotson, as she had the chance to stand on the field again, not as a cheerleader, but as someone who has overcome adversity and continues to thrive.

“It was such an indescribable moment being on the field for their field rehearsal, but then also for the Crucial Catch, the actual game,” Dotson recalled. “To be there as a former Chiefs Cheerleader and as Sabrina Dotson, a current cancer thriver, was such a special experience. It felt like coming full circle, and I was so honored to be part of that moment.”

For Dotson, the opportunity to be back on the field at Arrowhead Stadium while fighting cancer was a reminder of her strength and resilience. “It was a surreal experience,” she said. “Seeing the team play and being part of that energy again was such an uplifting moment.”

A Powerful Message of Hope
Sabrina Dotson has an important message for those facing similar battles: “If you are someone who is diagnosed stage 4 like me, there is still hope,” she said firmly. “There’s still research to be done, and there’s still progress being made. Don’t give up.”

Her words offer a beacon of hope for others who may be struggling with cancer or facing a life-altering diagnosis. Dotson believes that the fight isn’t just about surviving — it’s about thriving, finding strength in the face of adversity, and believing that every day is a step forward. “There is always hope, and there’s always more to fight for,” she said, her voice unwavering.

Inspiring the Kansas City Community and Beyond
Dotson’s battle with cancer has become much more than a personal journey; it has turned into an inspiration for the Kansas City community and others facing similar struggles. Her story is a testament to the power of hope, family, and community, showing that even in the darkest times, there is light.

Her ongoing fight against cancer and her positive attitude have garnered widespread admiration. Through her perseverance, Dotson reminds us all that no matter how difficult the journey, there is always hope and always a chance for recovery and growth.

“I don’t know what the future holds,” Dotson said, “but I know that with the support of my family, my friends, and my community, I can face whatever comes my way. And as long as there’s hope, there’s always a way forward.”
