SAN FRANCISCO DID IT. The Mac Jones trade secretly UNLOCKS the 49ers’ path to a SHOCKING $107 million superstar pursuit. (NFL DREAMS ON THE LINE)

In a move that could reshape the NFC landscape, the San Francisco 49ers have pulled off a savvy trade involving backup quarterback Mac Jones, quietly positioning themselves for a blockbuster pursuit of Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby. While the details of the Jones trade remain under wraps, sources indicate it has netted the Niners valuable draft capital—potentially the key to unlocking a deal for the $107 million edge-rushing superstar. With NFL dreams hanging in the balance, this could be the bold stroke that propels San Francisco back to Super Bowl contention.

The 49ers’ Defensive Woes: A Glaring Hole in an Otherwise Stellar Season

The 2025 season was a tale of triumph and tribulation for the 49ers. Despite their impressive overall performance, San Francisco’s defense struggled mightily to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Finishing dead last in the NFL with just 20 sacks during the regular season—a sharp drop from the 37 they recorded the year prior—the team was plagued by injuries to key pass rushers.

Star edge rusher Nick Bosa suffered a season-ending knee injury early on, forcing the Niners to rely on Bryce Huff, who battled his own availability issues. Rookie Mykel Williams and Yetur Gross-Matos also missed significant time, leaving the defensive front depleted and ineffective. This vulnerability exposed the 49ers in crucial games, highlighting the urgent need for reinforcements on the edge.

Enter the Mac Jones trade. By moving the popular backup QB, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have acquired extra draft picks that could be the linchpin in addressing this critical weakness.

Mac Jones: From Backup Hero to Trade Bait

Mac Jones stepped up admirably in 2025 when starter Brock Purdy went down, going 5-3 in eight starts. He completed nearly 70% of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. His poise under pressure and goofy, endearing personality made him a fan favorite in the Bay Area.

Jones’ contract is equally appealing: a cap hit of under $4 million in 2026, making him an affordable option for quarterback-needy teams. Potential suitors like the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, or Indianapolis Colts could see him as a low-risk bridge starter or high-upside backup.

Publicly, Lynch and Shanahan expressed a desire to keep Jones for the second year of his two-year deal. But as Vic Tafur of The Athletic noted on January 26, 2026, their stance might have been posturing. “Lynch and Shanahan didn’t seem flexible when the topic of trading quarterback Mac Jones came up on Wednesday,” Tafur wrote. “But that may have just been posturing, or a sense that it was too soon to hint at goodbye for the popular, self-admittedly goofy backup who won five games last season. Surely, an offer of a third-round pick would be too rich to pass up for more years of Jones, especially given Shanahan’s success in developing quarterbacks.”

The trade, reportedly fetching at least a third-round pick (and possibly more), provides the 49ers with the ammunition needed to pursue bigger fish—like Maxx Crosby.

The Prize: Maxx Crosby, the $107 Million Game-Changer

Maxx Crosby isn’t just a pass rusher; he’s a force of nature. In 2025, despite playing through knee issues, he notched 10 sacks in 15 games, along with 28 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and an interception. His ability to draw double teams and disrupt offenses makes him one of the league’s premier defensive ends.

But Crosby’s future in Las Vegas is uncertain. The Raiders finished a dismal 3-14, earning the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and signaling a full rebuild. Crosby publicly disagreed with the team’s decision to shut him down late in the season due to his knee injury, adding tension to an already complicated situation.

Tafur dropped a tantalizing hint: “An extra pick would help the 49ers address a need—or even stockpile picks for someone such as Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby, who should be available and who the team really liked when they went against him in a joint practice last summer. There are a lot of cool things in view when you have a nice window.”

Crosby’s contract is massive—a $107 million deal with cap hits of $35 million in 2026 and $30 million in 2027, before an out clause. Acquiring him wouldn’t be cheap; the Raiders would likely demand at least one future first-round pick (possibly two) and perhaps a young player in return.

For the 49ers, pairing Crosby with a healthy Nick Bosa could create a nightmare tandem for opposing offenses. However, fitting his salary under the cap would require creative maneuvering—potentially restructuring deals or making other moves.

The Risks and Rewards: NFL Dreams on the Line

This pursuit is a high-stakes gamble. The 49ers already have Bosa’s hefty contract on the books, and adding Crosby’s salary could strain their financial flexibility. A trade of this magnitude would signal all-in mode for a championship window that’s still wide open, thanks to talents like Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and Deebo Samuel.

If it works, San Francisco could boast the NFL’s most fearsome pass rush, erasing the defensive shortcomings of 2025 and positioning them as favorites for the 2026 Super Bowl. But if it falls through, the Jones trade still provides draft capital to bolster the edge group through the draft or smaller deals.

One thing’s clear: The Mac Jones trade isn’t just a minor transaction—it’s the secret key unlocking the door to a shocking superstar acquisition. With the NFL offseason heating up, all eyes are on the Bay Area. Will the 49ers land Crosby and chase their dreams, or will this bold vision remain just that? The drama is only beginning.
