🚨 COWBOYS’ DEFENSIVE STAFF SHAKEUP: New DC Christian Parker Leads Change with Key Interviews and Departures 👇

The Dallas Cowboys are wasting no time making significant changes to their defensive staff after a disappointing season, and it all starts with the hiring of Christian Parker as the new defensive coordinator. However, the defensive overhaul doesn’t stop there, as reports indicate the team is also considering several new candidates to further bolster their defensive coaching ranks.

Denzel Martin Interviewed for Key Defensive Role

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Cowboys are set to interview Denzel Martin, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ outside linebackers coach. Martin, who has been with the Steelers since 2016, brings a wealth of experience to the table. His coaching journey began as a scouting assistant before moving on to roles as a coaching assistant and, eventually, as the assistant outside linebackers coach. For the last three seasons, Martin has held the role of outside linebackers coach, a position in which he played a pivotal role in developing some of the Steelers’ top defensive players.

During his tenure in Pittsburgh, Martin was crucial in the development of T.J. Watt, who tied the NFL single-season sack record with 22.5 sacks in 2021, establishing himself as one of the league’s premier pass rushers. Additionally, Martin helped cultivate the growth of Alex Highsmith, a key contributor who was drafted by the Steelers in the third round of 2020. Given the success he’s had working with high-profile linebackers in Pittsburgh, Martin could be a strong candidate to bring the same level of impact to Dallas.

Exploring Other Coaching Options

While Martin’s interview is one of the most notable, the Cowboys are also speaking with Shane Bowen, the former defensive coach for the New York Giants. Bowen, who brings a wealth of experience working with defensive units, could provide the Cowboys with a fresh perspective as they look to improve their defense in 2026.

Departures and Replacements: Major Coaching Changes for Dallas

The Cowboys are also making moves to part ways with some of their current defensive staff members. Linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi, passing game coordinator Andre Curtis, and secondary/cornerbacks coach David Overstreet II will not be returning in 2026, according to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. These coaches, who came over from the Chicago Bears alongside former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, did not produce the desired results.

Borgonzi, in particular, faced significant challenges with the linebacker group, as second-year linebacker Marist Liufau took a step backward in his development. Additionally, offseason acquisitions Jack Sanborn and Kenneth Murray did not contribute significantly, leaving questions about the linebacking unit’s effectiveness.

The Cowboys’ secondary also struggled throughout the 2025 season, ranking dead last in the NFL against the pass, allowing a troubling 251.5 passing yards per game. This underperformance in both the linebacker corps and the secondary played a key role in the decision to move on from these coaches.

The Need for Change: A Fresh Approach for the Cowboys Defense

Given the Cowboys’ historically poor defensive performance in 2025, change was absolutely necessary. The defensive unit allowed some of the worst numbers in team history, prompting the need for a complete overhaul. With Christian Parker now in charge as the new defensive coordinator, he is already taking swift action to reshape the defense and bring in fresh blood that can help turn things around.

As the Cowboys prepare for the 2026 season, they are looking to revamp not only the coaching staff but also the defensive philosophy. With the right changes, the team hopes to see a resurgence in defensive performance and build a unit that can effectively complement the high-powered offense.

A New Era for Cowboys Defense

With the team making these bold moves, Dallas is clearly committed to improving on the defensive side of the ball. By bringing in experienced coaches like Denzel Martin and potentially Shane Bowen, the Cowboys are aiming to create a defense that can compete with the top teams in the NFL. Their success in these decisions could have a massive impact on the team’s ability to challenge for a Super Bowl title in the coming years.

While the coaching changes are still being finalized, it’s clear that the Cowboys’ front office is determined to get the defense back on track and rebuild it into a unit that can help carry the team into the playoffs and beyond. With the right coaching hires and an emphasis on player development, Dallas has the potential to make significant strides in 2026.
