Carlos Correa calls out Astros players for role in injury-plagued season

Carlos Correa's Impact on the Astros Has Been Swift, on and Off the FieldThe Houston Astros made one of the more fun trade deadline moves when they acquired Carlos Correa in a deal with the Minnesota Twins. While they didn’t make the playoffs, Correa is back in Houston and will be for some time.

However, it wasn’t all great for Correa coming back to Houston. There was one glaring issue with the team, a problem that plagued the entire season: injuries.

Chandler Rome of The Athletic shared a telling quote from Correa on the injuries this past season. In that comment, Correa called out the Astros players for their role in not being in the right routine to stay healthy for a full season.

Carlos Correa calls out Astros players for role in injury-riddled season

“We had way too many injuries last year,” Correa said, “and I feel like when I got here, people did not have the routine they needed to have in order for them to be able to withstand the whole season.”

This is a very telling comment from Correa. It’s an indictment on both the players, for not preparing their bodies better, and the training staff, for not putting the players in a position to maintain their health.

The Astros moved on from their head athletic trainer this offseason, and there’s a clear emphasis within the building for how the Astros want to improve their injury issues from the last few seasons.

This quote from Correa is already enough to get an idea of how rough things were last year, but it’s not all he said.

Carlos Correa is back with the Astros -- this time at third base

“For the young guys and the people who had not been doing this for a while or had not been through injuries in the past,” Correa said. “It’s easy to get carried away and go through the motions on a daily basis.”

Correa isn’t just blaming the younger players; he’s looping the veterans in for how the season was derailed due to injuries. They missed the postseason, and injuries can be largely to blame.

But, this comment from Correa indicates that these injury issues weren’t just bad luck, but the lack of commitment from the players and training staff in better preparing the players to avoid these injury issues.

Something needs to change, and Correa’s message in this piece from Rome should set the tone for how the Astros move forward with their injury management.
