A winter storm sweeping across the United States has thrown both NBA and college sports schedules into chaos, causing multiple game postponements, travel delays, and logistical challenges for teams and fans alike.
In addition to weather disruptions, the Miami Heat organization is recovering from a high-profile internal scandal. A former security officer, Marcos Thomas Perez, 62, has been sentenced to three years in federal prison and ordered to pay nearly $2 million in restitution after stealing hundreds of game-worn jerseys and other valuable memorabilia.
Perez, who worked for the Heat from 2016 to 2021 and later as an NBA security employee from 2022 to 2025, had previously spent 25 years with the Miami Police Department. Last summer, he pleaded guilty to transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce.
Authorities determined that Perez stole more than 400 jerseys and other prized items from a secured equipment room at the Kaseya Center, where memorabilia was stored for display in a future team museum. He sold these items through online marketplaces, exploiting his unique access as a gameday security officer.
Federal prosecutors and the FBI reported that over a three-year span, Perez sold more than 100 stolen items for approximately $1.9 million, often at bargain prices. Among the items was a Miami Heat jersey worn by LeBron James during the NBA Finals, which Perez sold for about $100,000. That same jersey later fetched $3.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction.
A search warrant executed at Perez’s home last April recovered nearly 300 additional stolen jerseys and memorabilia, all confirmed by the Miami Heat to have been stolen from their facility. This shocking revelation has left fans and the organization grappling with the betrayal of trust.
“This defendant was a former police officer who betrayed the public trust and exploited his access to our beloved hometown team for personal gain,” said US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Jason Reding Quinones. “The Miami Heat represent excellence built through hard work and discipline in South Florida – and this conduct was the opposite.”

As the Miami Heat continue to address the fallout from the theft, the broader sports landscape faces disruption due to the winter storm. NBA teams on the East Coast have had games postponed or relocated, while college basketball programs have faced travel cancellations and rescheduling challenges. Fans are advised to check team and league communications for updates.
The combination of off-court scandals and severe weather has created a tumultuous week for basketball, highlighting the challenges teams face beyond the court. Miami Heat players and staff are working to maintain focus on upcoming games, while law enforcement and the NBA continue their investigations to prevent future incidents.
Both the theft and weather disruptions serve as reminders of the unpredictable nature of professional sports, where external factors can affect schedules, team morale, and fan experience in significant ways. The Miami Heat, with their history of excellence and strong organizational culture, are determined to move forward and maintain the integrity of their brand and legacy amid these challenges.
