With most of the top-tier arms already off the board, Framber Valdez stands out as one of the most compelling starting pitchers still available on the market. At 32, Valdez is a proven left-hander with postseason experience and the kind of stuff that can still anchor a rotation-especially for a team looking to solidify its starting depth heading into spring.
His market, however, hasn’t exactly caught fire. That could shift quickly, especially in the wake of Freddy Peralta being dealt to the Mets. Teams that missed out on Peralta-or are still looking to bolster their rotation-might now see Valdez as the best available option.
One team that makes a lot of sense? The San Francisco Giants.
They’ve been relatively quiet this offseason, but there’s a clear need in their rotation behind Logan Webb and Robbie Ray. Valdez would slot in nicely as a No. 3 starter, and there’s an argument to be made he could even serve as a co-No. 2 depending on how things shake out.
The Giants’ infield defense could also be a big plus for Valdez. He thrives when he’s inducing ground balls, and Oracle Park-already one of the most pitcher-friendly environments in baseball-would give him the kind of support that could help him bounce back from an up-and-down 2025 campaign.
Yes, last season ended on a strange note when Valdez intentionally crossed up his catcher, a move that raised eyebrows and led to some questions about his mindset. But that moment, while unusual, doesn’t erase the body of work. He’s still a lefty with a heavy sinker, a sharp curveball, and the ability to eat innings at a high level.
For a Giants team that’s watched much of the winter go by without making a major splash, Valdez represents a chance to add a reliable, playoff-tested starter without breaking the bank. He wouldn’t just fill out the rotation-he could elevate it. If San Francisco is serious about staying competitive in a tough NL West, this is the kind of move that could make a real difference.
