Anyone but the Mets: Freddy Peralta Trade Talks Sting Braves Fans

By Chase Owens | 6 hours ago

For Atlanta Braves fans, there may not be a worse possible outcome this offseason than this one.

After months of trade rumors surrounding Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta, momentum is building toward what feels like the nightmare scenario: a deal sending him to the New York Mets. According to Jon Heyman, the Mets are now in serious talks with Milwaukee on a trade centered around the right-hander.

And yes — it hurts.

Mets Emerging as the Front-Runner

Braves get bad news on Freddy Peralta trade rumors due to two reasons - Yahoo Sports

The Braves were frequently mentioned as one of the most logical suitors for Peralta throughout the winter. Atlanta’s need for rotation depth was clear, and Peralta fit the profile of a pitcher who could tilt a postseason series.

Instead, it appears the Mets may have simply outbid them.

Early reports indicate that Jett Williams, the Mets’ dynamic shortstop prospect and the No. 30 overall prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, would be one of the headliners going back to Milwaukee.

Pat Ragazzo (@ragazzoreport):
The New York Mets are in serious talks to acquire Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade. Jett Williams would be one of the pieces going to Milwaukee.

If finalized, this would represent a major swing by a Mets organization that, just weeks ago, appeared directionless.

Why This Is a Gut Punch for Atlanta

Peralta is coming off an elite 2025 season, finishing fifth in NL Cy Young voting after posting:

  • 2.70 ERA

  • 3.64 FIP

  • 5.5 bWAR

He was widely viewed as the one attainable frontline starter Atlanta was willing to make a legitimate push for. The problem? The Braves simply didn’t have the prospect capital to match New York’s offer.

That alone would sting. Losing him to a division rival makes it worse.

While Peralta is under contract for just one more season, an extension with his new club is very much in play — especially for a Mets team desperate to stabilize its rotation and regain relevance in the NL East.

NL East Arms Race Is Heating Up

From Atlanta’s perspective, the timing couldn’t be worse.

Not only did the Braves miss out on a difference-making arm, but they may now have to face him multiple times this season. Meanwhile, the Mets — who seemed to be unraveling not long ago — are suddenly making decisive, aggressive moves.

The division as a whole is tightening:

  • The Mets appear ready to reload.

  • The Phillies are still searching for direction after missing on Bo Bichette, but remain dangerous.

  • The Braves, despite a strong core, now face a steeper climb if this deal goes through.

Just like that, the NL East looks far less forgiving.

Final Thought

What Might Hold Up Braves in Their Freddy Peralta Pursuit

For Braves fans, the sentiment is simple and universal:

Anyone but the Mets.

If Freddy Peralta does wind up in Queens, Atlanta will have to find another way to keep pace — because the margin for error in the NL East just got smaller, and the road to October just got harder.

BRAVES NEWS: The respect Walt Weiss has earned from Atlanta Braves fans didn’t happen just once—it’s been built in two separate chapters of his baseball life. First, as a player, he was the kind of steady, no-nonsense leader who did the small things right, the type of competitor fans quickly learn to trust in big moments. Years later, he earned that same respect again as a coach, helping shape a disciplined clubhouse culture and reinforcing the details that winning teams rely on when games tighten in October. What makes it stand out is consistency—different roles, same credibility, and a reputation that keeps getting validated over time.
