Packers WR Romeo Doubs Likely Headed Elsewhere in Free Agency Despite Breakout 2025 Season
Romeo Doubs delivered the best season of his NFL career in 2025, emerging as the Green Bay Packers’ most productive wide receiver—yet all signs point to him wearing a different uniform in 2026.
Doubs led Green Bay in receptions (55) and receiving yards (724) during the regular season, tied for the team lead with six touchdown catches, and saved his best performance for the postseason. In the Packers’ playoff matchup against Chicago, Doubs turned in a sensational outing with eight receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown, showcasing his reliability on the biggest stage.
Despite that production, Doubs is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, and the likelihood of a return to Green Bay appears slim.
Packers’ WR Depth Makes Doubs Expendable

The primary reason isn’t performance—it’s depth.
The Packers are loaded at wide receiver with Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Matthew Golden, Savion Williams, and Dontayvion Wicks all under contract through at least the 2026 season. With multiple young, talented receivers already on the books, Green Bay simply doesn’t have the financial flexibility—or roster space—to retain everyone.
There are also lingering concerns that factor into the decision. Doubs missed time earlier in his career after going AWOL during the 2024 season, and he has dealt with concussion issues, which may have impacted the Packers’ long-term evaluation.
While Doubs is expected to receive a solid contract on the open market, Green Bay likely won’t be the team offering it.
Doubs Aware of the Business Reality
Doubs has publicly acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his future, though he’s been careful not to show frustration.
“I have no idea what’s going to happen,” Doubs said at the end of the season. “No idea.”
In reality, the writing has been on the wall for months.
Back in September, the Packers signed Christian Watson to a one-year, $13.25 million extension that runs through 2026. Once that deal was finalized, Doubs’ path back to Green Bay became far less likely.
The Packers simply can’t pay every wide receiver on the roster—and with Watson, Reed, Wicks, Golden, and Williams all under contract for 2026, Doubs has become the odd man out.
“I would love to be a Green Bay Packer,” Doubs said Wednesday on FanDuel TV. “But I’m just aware of this business. I understand how things go.”
A Strong Return on a Fourth-Round Investment
Regardless of how his Packers tenure ends, Green Bay extracted tremendous value from Doubs.
Selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Doubs outperformed expectations almost immediately. He posted a respectable rookie campaign with 42 catches for 425 yards and three touchdowns, though a high ankle sprain sidelined him for five weeks.
“I was doing good, but sometimes life is adversity,” Doubs said. “You’ve just got to find a way to come back better.”
He did exactly that.
In 2023, Doubs finished second on the team in receptions (59) and receiving yards (674) during the regular season while tying for the team lead with eight touchdown catches. He also ranked fourth in the NFL in red-zone receiving touchdowns (seven), cementing his role as a trusted scoring threat.
That steady growth culminated in his breakout 2025 campaign—arguably his best work as a professional.
What’s Next for Romeo Doubs?
Doubs enters free agency as a proven, productive wide receiver in his prime. His combination of route discipline, contested-catch ability, and postseason production should make him attractive to teams looking for a reliable WR2 or high-end WR3.
While his time in Green Bay appears to be nearing its end, Doubs leaves behind a resume that reflects consistent improvement and clutch performances when it mattered most.
For the Packers, it’s a reminder of the difficult decisions that come with building through the draft. For Doubs, it’s likely the beginning of a new chapter—one that will come with a bigger role and a new opportunity elsewhere in 2026.
