Phillies Urged To Steal $119 Million Franchise Legend From Astros In Free Agency

As the offseason kicked off, the Philadelphia Phillies seemed to be connected to every rumor. The main one that came out of Philadelphia was the idea that the team was willing to trade its All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm, as long as the team could find a suitable replacement in free agency.

But what would a move like this even look like? FanSided’s Christopher Kline has the answer. If the Phillies are serious about cutting ties with Bohm, Kline suggests the team should look to add free-agent infielder Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros. Bregman is projected to sign a four-year, $119 million deal this winter.

It very well could be with the Phillies. “Bregman is 30 years old with a limited prime window, but he’s an established winner who still checks about every box. He’s disciplined at the plate, cool under pressure, and deft with his glove at the hot corner (or second base),” Kline wrote. “There’s no doubt that Bregman’s consistency would dramatically change the feel of this Phillies lineup, which can feel a little too boom-or-bust at times.”

The addition of Bregman would be absolutely perfect for this lineup. The Phillies could leverage Bohm’s value in a blockbuster trade for a star like Garrett Crochet, Luis Robert Jr., or Ryan Helsley.

The Astros are very aggressively trying to bring their franchise cornerstone back, though. Houston will likely pay closer to $200 million over six years to try to bring Bregman back, so if the Phillies are going to bring him in, they need to be willing to open up the checkbook.
