Green Bay Packers Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley in the Running for Titans Head Coaching Job
The Green Bay Packers are facing the possibility of losing their defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley, as he’s emerged as one of three finalists for the Tennessee Titans’ head coaching position. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Hafley is set to have an in-person interview with the Titans on Tuesday, following the interviews of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh on Monday.
Hafley is also receiving a second interview with the Miami Dolphins, where he’s seen as one of the top contenders to secure the role. His potential departure is a significant loss for the Packers, who have benefitted greatly from his leadership over the past two seasons.
Tennessee Titans’ Search for a Head Coach
The Titans find themselves at a critical juncture after firing Brian Callahan following a disappointing 1-5 start to the 2025 season. Interim coach Mike McCoy struggled to turn things around, finishing with a 2-9 record and leaving the Titans with a 3-14 finish. The team’s defense, in particular, was one of the league’s weakest in 2025, ranking 28th in scoring defense and allowing a staggering 30 touchdown passes.
Despite the rough 2025 season, the Titans have several reasons to be optimistic about their future. They hold the first overall pick in the 2025 draft, securing a potential franchise quarterback in Cam Ward. Additionally, they possess the fourth overall pick in 2026, which gives them a prime opportunity to add a game-changing defensive player. This makes the defensive coordinator role an incredibly important one for the franchise, and Hafley’s strong track record of turning around defenses makes him a compelling candidate.
Hafley’s Success with the Packers’ Defense
Hafley has earned significant recognition for his work with the Green Bay Packers defense, especially during his tenure as the team’s defensive coordinator over the last two seasons. Under his leadership, the Packers’ defense became one of the best in the league, finishing No. 6 in scoring defense in 2024. His ability to transform the defense and change the culture in Green Bay has made him a sought-after candidate in this head coaching cycle. Even though the 2025 season ended in disappointment for the Packers, particularly with the absence of key player Micah Parsons, Hafley’s reputation has only grown stronger, and he remains a top candidate for multiple head coaching vacancies.
If Hafley moves on, the Packers will need to find a replacement. Fortunately, there are plenty of potential candidates for the job. The Packers have already compiled a list of 20 potential defensive coordinator candidates to step in and maintain the defensive improvements Hafley brought to the team.
Hafley’s Head Coaching Interviews: A Busy Schedule
Hafley’s candidacy for multiple head coaching positions has made him one of the most in-demand coaches in this cycle. Beyond his interviews with the Titans and Dolphins, Hafley has also interviewed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, and Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are expected to hire former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, but Hafley’s name has been circulating with other teams that are looking for a coach who can revamp their defensive units.
The Packers’ Potential Defensive Coordinator Search
If Hafley indeed leaves Green Bay for a head coaching role, the Packers will have some significant decisions to make regarding their defensive coordinator position. The Packers’ defense has improved drastically under Hafley’s leadership, and the team will need to find a coach who can continue building on that success. With a strong list of candidates and the desire to keep the defense in championship contention, the Packers will need to move quickly to fill the role if Hafley departs.
For now, it remains to be seen where Jeff Hafley will land, but one thing is clear: his leadership and success with the Packers has made him one of the top names in the coaching carousel, and whichever team hires him will be getting a proven winner who can revitalize their defense. As the Packers prepare for the possibility of a coaching change, they’ll be focused on finding the right defensive mind to continue their defensive dominance in the seasons ahead.
