Warriors are dismissing Michael Porter Jr. trade in favor of long-rumored target

Golden State Warriors Weigh Trade Options: Porter Jr. Realistic, Murphy Still the Dream

Golden State Warriors fans have been buzzing about Michael Porter Jr. as a potential trade target, yet reports suggest the franchise itself isn’t as eager as the fanbase might hope. While the forward has been the subject of speculation across social media and sports media outlets, the Warriors’ front office appears to be taking a more cautious approach. According to Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area, the organization has expressed hesitancy in pursuing Porter aggressively, instead directing attention toward Trey Murphy III, a player who has long been a priority for Golden State executives, including Mike Dunleavy Jr.

Murphy first emerged as a target during the offseason, and interest in him dates back even further. Golden State reportedly passed on Murphy twice during the 2021 NBA Draft, a decision that has lingered in the minds of the front office as they continue to monitor rising talent in the league. Now 25 years old, Murphy has made a strong case for himself as one of the NBA’s ascending wings. Currently, he is averaging a career-high 22.2 points per game, shooting 50.3 percent from the floor and 38.9 percent from three-point range, showcasing his efficiency both inside and beyond the arc.

While fans have fixated on Porter as a potential solution for Golden State’s perimeter scoring, Johnson reports that the Warriors are not prepared to part with multiple first-round picks for the Nets forward. In contrast, Murphy is a player they reportedly would consider sacrificing significant draft capital for, making him a clear priority for the front office in the wake of Jonathan Kuminga’s trade request.

“They haven’t shown any desire to give the Nets multiple first-round picks for Porter,” Johnson wrote. “The player they would do that for is 25-year-old Trey Murphy, who is averaging a career-high 22.2 points per game on 38.9 percent shooting from three-point range. But the Pelicans have even less reason than the Nets to move their best asset during the season.”

The challenge, however, lies in the Pelicans’ reluctance to trade Murphy midseason. Murphy has been in exceptional form, scoring 31 points or more in four of the past five games, while also contributing 6.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists per contest during that stretch. This level of production has elevated his trade value, making it extremely difficult for the Warriors to secure a deal without offering a substantial package, potentially including multiple first-round picks.

Salary considerations also play a role in the calculus. Murphy is earning roughly $13 million less than Porter this season, giving Golden State more flexibility in structuring trades and potentially keeping fifth-year wing Moses Moody as part of the core. This makes Murphy not only an appealing talent upgrade but also a more manageable financial acquisition, allowing the Warriors to maintain stability around Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson while still bolstering their roster.

ESPN reporters Shams Charania and Anthony Slater have also highlighted that the Warriors would be willing to give up significant draft capital for the “right player,” further suggesting that Murphy remains at the top of the organization’s wish list. Despite Porter being considered the more attainable option in the short term, Murphy represents a higher ceiling, a younger talent with proven scoring versatility and defensive potential capable of complementing Golden State’s core for years to come.

The juxtaposition between Porter’s realism and Murphy’s aspiration creates an interesting dynamic for the Warriors. On one hand, Porter Jr. may represent a realistic, achievable move, albeit one that would likely require fewer assets and thus a more conservative approach. On the other, Murphy embodies the franchise’s long-term vision—a player who could make an immediate impact while offering flexibility in salary and alignment with Golden State’s pace-and-space offense.

This situation raises a strategic question for the Warriors: At what point do they pivot from their Murphy dream and pursue Porter as the more pragmatic trade target? If the Pelicans continue to hold firm, refusing to negotiate midseason, the organization may have no choice but to shift focus, potentially initiating trade talks with the Nets regarding Porter. Such a decision would be rooted in timing, roster needs, and the reality of competing in a loaded Western Conference, where immediate reinforcements could mean the difference between a deep playoff run and an early exit.

Porter, despite his higher salary and slightly less favorable fit in Golden State’s long-term plans, could still provide a meaningful boost. His scoring ability, length, and defensive versatility could help the Warriors remain competitive against top-tier Western Conference teams such as the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, and Los Angeles Lakers. However, the organization must weigh this against the opportunity cost of giving up future assets and potentially bypassing a more ideal fit in Murphy.

Latest Michael Porter Jr. trade rumor is crushing for Warriors fans

For now, the Warriors remain tied to Murphy as their preferred target, while Porter’s name lingers as a secondary option should the Pelicans refuse to budge. Fans will undoubtedly continue to speculate, with social media amplifying each rumor and report, but the front office appears measured, strategic, and patient, prioritizing the long-term implications of each trade decision over short-term fan excitement.

In conclusion, Golden State’s trade strategy this season underscores the delicate balancing act facing championship-caliber franchises. While Michael Porter Jr. remains a tantalizing option, Trey Murphy III continues to hold the front office’s attention as the ideal wing acquisition. The Warriors must navigate a combination of talent evaluation, asset management, and competitive timing as they consider how best to strengthen the roster around Curry, Thompson, and their core contributors.

The coming weeks leading to the trade deadline will be pivotal. Will the Warriors continue to pursue their dream target in Murphy, or will they pivot to Porter as a practical alternative? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Golden State is determined to maximize their window with Stephen Curry at the helm, and every move will reflect that urgency.
