Astros Quietly Shift Stance on Trade Target After Plans Fall Through

The Houston Astros are finally showing their hand. After weeks of mixed signals and front-office tightrope walking, the team is now “actively listening” to trade offers for infielder Isaac Paredes, according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal. While the Astros had hoped to move Christian Walker this offseason, it’s become increasingly clear that Paredes – younger, more controllable, and coming off an All-Star campaign – is the more valuable trade chip.

Let’s break this down.

Paredes is under team control through 2027, and that kind of long-term value doesn’t come around often, especially for a player who just made his first All-Star team. He’s projected to earn around $9 million in arbitration, and the fact that he and the Astros haven’t yet agreed to terms might be more than just a paperwork delay – it could be a sign that both sides know a change of scenery is on the horizon.

Astros' arbitration drama with Isaac Paredes could make their next step crystal clear

From a roster-building standpoint, the Astros are in a bit of a bind. They’d prefer to keep both Paredes and Walker, but the reality of payroll constraints and roster balance is forcing their hand. Paredes’ contract is simply easier to move, and that’s likely what’s pushing this situation toward a trade.

Now, if Houston is indeed ready to deal Paredes before Opening Day, the Boston Red Sox are a team to watch closely. Boston still has a glaring hole at third base after failing to bring back Alex Bregman.

They could look to the free-agent market – Eugenio Suárez is still out there – but Paredes offers a much more intriguing long-term solution. He’s 25, has power, positional versatility, and has proven he can contribute at a high level.

The Red Sox have also shown they’re willing to spend this offseason, recently locking up Ranger Suárez on a five-year deal. That kind of move suggests they’re not just patching holes – they’re building something. And if that’s the case, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them dangle one of their young, cost-controlled arms in a potential deal for Paredes.

Names like Connelly Ealy and Peyton Tolle could come up in talks. Both are intriguing young pitchers with upside, and while the Astros’ rotation looks better than it did at the start of the winter, adding another controllable starter could be a smart hedge against injuries or regression.

It’s a bit of a tough pill to swallow for Houston fans. In a different timeline, Paredes could’ve been a cornerstone of the next contending Astros core.

But decisions made at last year’s trade deadline have narrowed the team’s options. Now, instead of building around a young All-Star infielder, Houston may be forced to move him just to keep the roster balanced and the books in order.

There’s still time for things to shift – a surprise offer, a change in arbitration talks, or a deal for Walker that finally materializes – but for now, the writing’s on the wall. The Astros are in listening mode, and Isaac Paredes is very much on the block.
