BAM ADEBAYO UNDER FIRE. As struggles mount, Bam Adebayo faces sharp criticism, with whispers around the league questioning his impact and consistency. Every missed play, every slow start, every shaky stat line adds fuel to a storm that’s threatening to define his season..ll 👇👇👇

It only took one game for Heat fans to irrationally call out Bam Adebayo

Bam Adebayo has long been a cornerstone of the Miami Heat, a defensive powerhouse and reliable second option during the franchise’s championship-contending seasons, but his offensive production has been on a noticeable decline in recent years.

During the Heat’s magical 2022-23 run to the NBA Finals, Adebayo averaged 20.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, anchoring both ends of the court alongside Jimmy Butler while providing stability when other stars, like Tyler Herro, were sidelined.

At that time, Adebayo’s role as the No. 2 option complemented Miami’s fast-paced, pick-and-roll-heavy offense perfectly, allowing him to operate near the basket and create opportunities for himself and his teammates.

However, Adebayo’s scoring has steadily decreased since that season. In 2023-24, he averaged 19.3 points per game, then 18.1 in 2024-25, and this season he is down to 16.4 points per game while shooting a career-low 44.6 percent from the field, well below his 53.1 percent career average.

One key issue has been Adebayo’s shot selection. He now takes only 16.7 percent of his shots within three feet of the basket, down from 34.0 percent for his career, while attempting 34.6 percent of his shots from 16 feet and beyond.

Unfortunately, that adjustment has not yielded efficient results. He is converting just 31.7 percent on mid-range shots and 32.0 percent on three-pointers, leaving the Heat with diminished offensive output from a player who once dominated around the rim.

Recent games have reinforced concerns. Since December 15, Adebayo has not scored 20 points in any contest, averaging only 11.4 points on 37.1 percent shooting across 11 games, including a 21.7 percent three-point clip, signaling a troubling stretch for the team’s primary big man.

An NBA scout told the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson that the Heat face a “harsh reality”: “He’s not really a max player anymore. The new offensive system hasn’t done him any justice. His offense has regressed. He’s better in a pick-and-roll-oriented system than what they’re running now.”

That sentiment highlights a critical clash between player skill set and team scheme. Adebayo excels in pick-and-roll actions, where he can read defenders and create opportunities, yet Miami’s current offense emphasizes spacing and perimeter play, limiting his natural strengths.

Compounding the issue is that the Heat invested heavily in Adebayo’s future. In the summer of 2024, he signed a three-year max contract extension worth $161 million, a deal that begins next season and positions him among the league’s top-paid big men.

Bam Adebayo is quietly having an identity crisis on reeling Heat

While at the time the contract was justified based on his previous production, the current decline raises questions about the return on investment, especially if his offensive struggles continue and the Heat cannot fully leverage his defensive impact.

Former NBA point guard Jeff Teague recently weighed in on the situation, suggesting that pairing Adebayo with a true point guard like Ja Morant could reinvigorate him and restore the pick-and-roll dynamic that maximizes his abilities.

“Bam don’t really be killing. He’s just a good player. He’s not a star. He’s a good complementary piece. He’s still a quality player, fringe All-Star,” Teague said on the “Club 520” show, emphasizing that the right system could unlock a higher ceiling for Miami’s center.

Teague continued, noting that adding “some new blood in there that can run P&Rs with him” could help Adebayo step up, as he currently lacks the floor-spacing advantage and ball-handling support needed to consistently attack defenses.

The concern goes beyond individual performance; the Heat need Adebayo to contribute offensively to remain competitive in the Eastern Conference, where teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, and Miami’s own rivals are increasingly potent.

Tuesday night’s matchup against the Phoenix Suns offers another test, as Miami looks for signs that Adebayo can regain confidence and production, particularly in crucial scoring moments that could determine the outcome in close games.

Historically, Adebayo’s combination of defensive versatility and offensive adaptability has allowed Miami to maintain balance, but the current dip in efficiency underscores how dependent the team is on him finding a way to score consistently.

In addition to scoring, Adebayo’s playmaking has declined. He is averaging just 2.6 assists per game this season, down from 4.3 last year, further reflecting how the offensive system may not fully suit his strengths and diminishing the Heat’s overall offensive flow.

Analysts suggest that while Adebayo’s defensive impact remains elite, the offensive regression diminishes his overall value relative to the max contract, creating pressure on the Heat to either adjust the system or explore roster options to complement his play.

As veteran reporter Sean Deveney notes, Adebayo’s decline represents a critical story for the Heat, combining contract expectations, offensive efficiency, and long-term team strategy, all converging on a player once regarded as an All-Star mainstay.

Heat's Bam Adebayo received wake-up call with new captain status

For Miami, the path forward involves carefully balancing system adjustments, potential roster additions like a pure point guard, and leveraging Adebayo’s strengths while minimizing offensive liabilities in a conference filled with high-powered offenses.

Bam Adebayo remains an essential figure for the Heat, but the next few months—and the remainder of the season—will likely determine whether he can regain his All-Star form or whether Miami must recalibrate its approach to maximize both his and the team’s potential.
