The Chicago Cubs have received an update regarding free agent Alex Bregman.
The Chicago Cubs have been heavily involved in the Alex Bregman market during MLB free agency. However, there has been pessimism among fans that they will actually end up being able to land him.
A new update has been provided about Bregman’s market. It pertains specifically to the Arizona Diamondbacks, but the Cubs are impacted as well.
According to a January 9 report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Diamondbacks have decided to keep star second baseman Ketel Marte but remain firmly interested in signing Bregman.
“Word is, they are still open to Alex Bregman, who has a robust market (also Boston, Toronto, Cubs). D-Backs are a team that cares about winning,” Heyman wrote on X.

With Chicago still being in the running for Bregman, that could set up a perfect offseason outcome for the Cubs.
Earlier in the week, Chicago pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Miami Marlins for 27-year-old starting pitcher Edward Cabrera. After a slow start to the offseason, that move was music to the earns of Cubs fans.
Cabrera will fill the void that was left in the starting rotation. Justin Steele will also be back at some point this season.
While the move for Cabrera was a quality addition, Chicago still needs help offensively. Kyle Tucker is almost certain to leave town in MLB free agency. The Cubs can’t be counted out entirely and he remains a free agent, but Tucker seems likely to be a one-and-done player for the team.
Assuming he does sign elsewhere, Chicago will need to find a way to replace him. Bregman, in particular, has been viewed as a player who could help the Cubs accomplish that goal.
What Would Alex Bregman Bring to the Cubs?

Bregman is no stranger to rumors surrounding Chicago. Last offseason, the Cubs were one of the most interested teams in signing him. However, the Boston Red Sox swooped in and signed him in free agency instead.
Seeing the team show interest in him again is no surprise.
Adding Bregman would give Chicago a consistent veteran presence at the plate. During the 2025 MLB season with the Red Sox, Bregman played in 114 games. He hit 18 home runs to go along with 62 RBI, while also producing a slash line of .273/.360/.462.

Those numbers would look very good in the Cubs’ lineup. Losing Tucker would be a tough blow, but backing that up by signing Bregman would help ease the pain.
Fellow MLB insider Jon Morosi also connected Chicago to Bregman recently. After the team traded for Cabrera, he name-dropped Bregman as the one free agent bat the Cubs are still showing heavy interest in bringing onboard.
“The one free agent bat that they remain linked to: Alex Bregman,” Morosi said.
Only time will tell whether or not Chicago is willing to pay up to bring Bregman in. He’s not going to come cheap, but would help put the Cubs in a much better position to compete for a World Series run if the team can get a deal done.
