Mets ‘are being used’ to jack up price for Juan Soto, says NY radio host

WFAN host Evan Roberts is confident that the Mets are being used.

On Tuesday, Roberts shared that he believes Juan Soto’s ultimate goal is to re-sign with the Yankees, despite the numerous leaks surrounding his meetings with other clubs. These leaks are designed to squeeze as much money from the Yankees as possible, Roberts believes.

“My honest perception is I think the Mets are being used, and it scares me,” Roberts said, via SNY. “I think Scott Boras is leaking all of this stuff out. And I think Scott Boras has a reason on why he leaks stuff out.

“I believe, and I hope I’m wrong about this. … I think that Juan Soto has probably told Scott Boras he wants to stay with the New York Yankees. That is the read I’m getting on this.

“He wants to stay with the Yankees, but he’s telling Scott now, get me the most money. And I think that putting the Mets over the way the leaks have portrayed it is trying to apply pressure on Hal Steinbrenner.”

Most recently, New York radio legend Chris Russo and The New York Post’s Jon Heyman revealed that Soto actually met with Mets owner Steve Cohen at the billionaire’s Beverly Hills mansion.

Other reports, like one from former Mets infielder-turned-MLB-news-breaker Carlos Baerga claimed Cohen had offered Soto $660 million. And Yankees announcer Michael Kay added that Cohen would beat the highest offer by $50 million.

All told, these reports indicate that the Mets are the “clear-cut favorite,” as an executive told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently, to land Soto. But are they really?

Roberts doesn’t think so. He still thinks there’s a chance for the Mets though.

“The good news is,” Robers said, “I’m sure there’s a number that if Hal doesn’t get to and Steve does, where Scott and Juan are going to say, ‘Alright, we gave you every shot in the world. We’re gone.’”
