LeBron James Details Main Lakers Problems After Another Loss

December 31, 2025 | 14:22
LeBron James did not sugarcoat the situation after the Los Angeles Lakers suffered another disappointing loss to close out the year. Following a 128ā106 defeat to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night, the Lakersā fourth loss in their last five games, the veteran superstar openly addressed the issues that continue to plague the team.
The loss underscored a troubling trend for Los Angeles, particularly on the defensive end. December proved to be a difficult month for the Lakers, who finished with the second-worst defensive efficiency in the NBA, ranking 29th overall. When asked about the defensive struggles in the locker room, James pointed to a combination of mistakes that have repeatedly put the team at a disadvantage.
āI donāt have the numbers in front of me,ā James said, ābut I thought defensively tonight we had moments.ā
However, he quickly explained how those moments were undermined by self-inflicted errors.
āItās hard to defend pick-sixes,ā James said. āWe had too many pick-sixes where we turn the ball over, itās hard to get back. Teams are running on us and getting a lot of transition points.ā
James emphasized that turnovers and missed assignments often lead to easy scoring opportunities for opponents, making it nearly impossible to establish a consistent defensive rhythm.
āTurning the ball over, sometimes offensive rebounds ā things of that nature. We just gotta get better on that end of the floor.ā
Injuries Disrupting Chemistry

Beyond defensive lapses, James highlighted injuries as a major factor behind the Lakersā inconsistency this season. The team has rarely been at full strength, with multiple rotation players sidelined for extended stretches.
Currently, Rui Hachimura is expected to miss another week with a calf strain, while Austin Reaves is out for at least a month due to a Grade 2 strain in his left calf. James noted that the constant lineup changes have made it difficult to build chemistry and consistency.
āWe havenāt had a full team all year,ā James said. āMaybe one game ā maybe not even that.ā
He continued:
āNot having our All-Star two guard out, Ruiās now out, and Gabeās been out for a minute. Jaxson just came back. Itās been a lot of in and out.ā
According to James, the lack of continuity affects everything from on-court communication to substitution patterns and trust among teammates.
āItās very hard to get a rhythm with chemistry on the floor when you donāt know who youāre going to play with every night,ā he explained.
Still, James made it clear that injuries are not an excuse.
āThereās no excuse. We still gotta go out and execute.ā
A Historic Night Amid the Struggles
Despite the loss, James achieved another milestone in his legendary career. He finished the game with 17 points and became just the 12th player in NBA history to appear in a game at age 41 or older. It was also his 1,577th career game, placing him second all-time behind Hall of Famer Robert Parish.
James acknowledged that, despite the final score, the effort was there.
āI thought we played hard, we executed,ā he said. āBut the turnovers were too many pick-sixes, and the better team won tonight.ā
Looking Ahead

The Lakers now sit at 20ā11 on the season, still firmly in the playoff picture but searching for answers as the schedule intensifies. With injuries mounting and defensive consistency elusive, Jamesā comments reflect both urgency and realism.
As the calendar turns to the new year, the Lakers will need cleaner execution, better ball security, and improved defensive discipline if they hope to contend in a loaded Western Conference ā even as they wait for a healthier roster to come together.
“I thought defensively tonight we had moments, but as I said, it’s going to be hard to defend pick-sixes. You know, we had too many pick-sixes where we turn the ball over, it’s hard to get back, you’re not getting back, teams are running on us, they get a lot of transition points. “Turning the ball over, sometimes offensive rebounds, things of that nature.

Currently, two starters are sidelined: Rui Hachimura will miss another week with a calf strain, and Austin Reaves is out for at least a month with a grade 2 strain in his left calf. “Well, we haven’t had a full team all year,” James noted. “Maybe one game we’ve had a full roster, maybe even not. We’ve got some very important guys out right now, and obviously, an All-Star being out.
“Not having our All-Star two guard out, Rui’s now out, and Gabe’s been out for a minute, Jaxson just came back, you know, it’s been a lot of in and out.
So, it’s very hard to kind of get a rhythm, with chemistry on the floor with guys that you know you’re going to play with every night, guys you know you’re going to come in with the subs and patterns and things like that, but there’s no excuse.
