Alex Bregman declined his player option with the Boston Red Sox to become a free agent; however, business has been slow. Bregman is still the top third baseman in MLB free agency, but teams are also negotiating with other elite position players, such as Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette.

Last offseason, Bregman’s free agency saga dragged into the New Year, forcing multiple teams out of the equation. The former Houston Astros third baseman ultimately signed with Boston, but the contract had opt-outs so he could return to free agency after a year at Fenway Park.

As of now, Bregman is still searching for a team in a slow free agency market with no end in sight. Below, we dive into five potential landing spots for Bregman, as it only takes one team to step up with the right contract.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs were in the mix to sign Bregman last offseason and could still use his services. Chicago had a virtual meeting with the 31-year-old player, but a deal didn’t come to fruition. There is still plenty of time for the Cubs to step up, but will they go in that direction after not committing to Bregman with a long-term contract last offseason?

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox remain the ideal fit for Bregman in MLB free agency. Boston saw Bregman’s elite leadership in the clubhouse, despite missing a handful of games due to a quad injury. The three-time All-Star third baseman should be the Red Sox’s top priority after losing the Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber sweepstakes during the MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando.

Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers still need a third baseman, but Bregman might not be the best fit. The Tigers and Bregman stalled in negotiations last offseason, and the organization already has an elevated payroll with second baseman Gleyber Torres and pitcher Jack Flaherty coming back. Detroit is still a natural landing spot for Bregman, but it’s not as clear-cut as last year.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies could be a dark horse for Bregman if his free agency market doesn’t pick up steam. Philadelphia would likely have to trade third baseman Alec Bohm, but landing the star free agent would help in every area. The Phillies may not want to give out another long-term contract to a player on the wrong side of 30 years old, but Bregman would elevate the team’s ceiling in 2026.

Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners could make a play for Bregman if the team doesn’t re-sign third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Seattle almost made the 2025 World Series, but came up short in Game 7 of the ALCS. The Mariners know they need to acquire top-end talent to improve their chances of making the World Series, and Bregman would provide elite leadership and defense at third base.
