Giannis Antetokounmpo #34 of the Milwaukee Bucks dunks against the Washington Wizards during the first half at Capital One Arena on December 01, 2025 in Washington, DC.
Two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo reportedly doesn’t have a long list of preferred spots if and when the Milwaukee Bucks make him available in trades.
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the New York Knicks and Miami Heat are atop Antetokounmpo’s choices, but there aren’t too many other teams he’d be interested in.
“The list might not be that long if you got New York in there. You got Miami,” Amick said on Monday’s episode of The Athletic’s “NBA Daily” podcast.
“I think Miami is worth watching,” added Amick. “That’s another one that checks a lot of boxes. It’s not a list of teams that I think is going to hold up the market.”
Giannis Has the Leverage
The veteran insider co-signed ESPN’s Brian Windhorst’s recent claims that Antetokounmpo will dictate where he ends up, even though the Bucks are not obligated to work with him on a trade. The “Greek Freak” has a player option for the 2027-28 season and could potentially test free agency in 2027. As such, the team that trades for him beforehand could ink him to a long-term extension once a move materializes.
“Every team with Giannis interest does not matter if he doesn’t want to go there,” Amick said of the long list of suitors interested in a Giannis trade.
“He can opt out next summer [2027],” Amick added. “It’s a short enough timeline wise where Giannis is in control. If he doesn’t want to come to your team, you don’t want to do it. You’d have to give up to much then he’s going to bounce.”
Giannis Trade: Betting Odds
Of course, there’s always the possibility of a team swinging for the fences and gambling on acquiring Antetokounmpo even if he doesn’t make a long-term commitment. The Toronto Raptors used that formula in 2018 when they famously traded for Kawhi Leonard, which led to their franchise-first NBA championship. Leonard would bounce to the LA Clippers the following year, but the Raptors still got their elusive title.
The Knicks remain the odds-on betting favorites to pull off a Giannis trade, per Poymarket, followed by the Heat, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets. The San Antonio Spurs — who have a boatload of young stars and draft assets — were previously earmarked as a destination for the Greek superstar, but are reportedly no longer keen on the blockbuster move. According to insider Marc Stein, the Rockets, another team flush with young assets, are also potentially out of the running.
“There is a growing belief among trade-trackers that San Antonio and Houston, like Oklahoma City, do not plan to join the chase for Antetokounmpo,” Stein wrote in his latest Substack. “All three of those teams, as you can imagine, like what they have going.”
This past weekend, insider Chris Haynes noted that Antetokounmpo has three specific criteria that could determine his next home: a) a city that has sunshine, b) a team located in a big market and c) most importantly, a chance to compete for a title.
