2025 can’t end soon enough for the Kansas City Chiefs.
As if 2025 hasn’t gone bad enough for them, the Kansas City Chiefs lost quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a serious-looking knee injury during Sunday’s crushing defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers.
With less than two minutes to go in Sunday’s must-win clash, Patrick Mahomes went down with a knee injury after being tackled by Da’Shawn Hand.
Mahomes stayed down for several minutes in visible pain and had to leave the game:
Here’s another slo-mo angle of the hit:
Patrick Mahomes then had to be taken into the locker room and did not return. Gardner Minshew II had to finish the game, throwing a game-sealing interception that ended the Chiefs’ playoff hopes.
Before leaving the game, Mahomes completed just 16 pass attempts for 189 yards, no touchdowns and a pick, per ESPN.
With the loss, Kansas City falls to 6-8 and has officially been eliminated from postseason contention. With their season over, it’s unlikely we’ll see Mahomes play again this year. Even if he avoided a serious injury.
Patrick Mahomes suffered a devastating injury against the Chargers.
It is not looking good for Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes sustained a left knee injury in the Kansas City Chiefs’ 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He departed from the game with 1:53 remaining. The injury occurred while Mahomes was rolling out toward the sideline and throwing the ball downfield.
A Chargers defender pulled him to the ground during his throw. His leg bent awkwardly as he lost his footing. He wouldn’t get up right away. Mahomes remained down on the field for multiple minutes. Trainers examined his leg.
He was in clear discomfort as he removed his helmet. He would then rise to his feet and walk into the medical tent. The star quarterback was then helped up the tunnel and into the locker room.
Chiefs Give Worst Possible Update On Patrick Mahomes
Following the game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had bad news. He announced Patrick Mahomes will have an MRI to determine the severity of his knee injury.
Reid says it “doesn’t look good.”
Andy Reid wasn’t lying, as it was confirmed shortly after that Mahomes has a torn ACL and his season is officially over.
The Chiefs trailed, 16-13, when Patrick Mahomes left the contest. He completed 16 of 28 passes for 189 yards without a touchdown. The star quarterback also had one interception and was sacked five times.
The 10-year playoff streak they had was the second-longest in NFL history. They will now watch the playoffs from home for the first time since 2014. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Mahomes’ status for the start of the 2026 season is now up in the air thanks to this brutal diagnosis.
