It wasn’t all that surprising that the Dallas Cowboys chose not to activate Trevon Diggs from injured reserve for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.
While Diggs has been adamant that he’s healthy enough to play and wants to return to the field, Brian Schottenheimer sounded alarms on Thursday when he said that Diggs has to be more “consistent” both in practice and meetings.
The Sunday Night Football broadcast showed Diggs on the sideline in the third quarter, and Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth got to talking about his absence.
Collinsworth kept his analysis short and sweet, and it was spot-on.
“Still stuff going on. I don’t know what we know all the stuff,” Collinsworth said.
Cris Collinsworth exposed the ugly truth behind the Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs situation
Collinsworth didn’t need to say anything more than that.
The Cowboys have not revealed much about why Diggs landed on IR.
He was dealing with some swelling in his knee, but the circumstances of his concussion, which he suffered at home, remain a mystery.
It stands to reason that a lot will come out after the season, from both sides.
Diggs is playing nice for now. Similarly, Jerry Jones has pulled punches when asked about the former All-Pro.
With all of the pent-up tension and the Cowboys opting not to play a seemingly healthy Diggs while their secondary struggles, the storytelling could get ugly.
Cowboys fans will remember Jones calling out Diggs multiple times in the offseason while Diggs rehabbed away from the team.
The team then chose to enforce the $500,000 de-escalator in Diggs’ contract, and Jones threw Diggs under the bus for failing to step up as a leader.
Diggs seemed to get the last laugh when he was cleared to play in Week 1, after initially being expected to miss multiple games, but his play and effort quickly erased that.
The 27-year-old didn’t help matters when he all but threw Matt Eberflus and his teammates under the bus after Dallas’ 30-27 loss to the Panthers in Week 6, a game in which he was responsible for multiple big plays.
That was the last time Diggs suited up this season. At this rate, it would be surprising if that wasn’t the last game he ever played with the Cowboys.
