When the Miami Dolphins knocked off the Buffalo Bills in Week 10 to help ignite their midseason turn around, it served as a narrative-busting moment for head coach Mike McDaniel and his team. There’s been plenty of focus throughout the past few years about Miami’s ability to beat winning teams, especially the one that resides in Western New York. As a coach on the hot seat, it marked exactly the kind of win that McDaniel desperately needed to inspire some hope.
Next Monday night, McDaniel and his Dolphins team will get their next narrative-busting opportunity. And it will feature every narrative around McDaniel’s tenure all rolled into one.
Miami Dolphins can formally exercise their demons under Mike McDaniel with a win against Pittsburgh

Week 15? A road game in western Pennsylvania for a blistery cold December night game on Monday Night Football against a 7-6 Steelers team that leads the AFC North and has everything to play for.
Including playoff games, the Dolphins are 4-12 in primetime games under Mike McDaniel since the start of the 2022 season. They’re 12-22 on the road. 7-7 in December. 7-22 against opponents that finished the season with a winning record. 0-5 in games that were 40 degrees or colder at kickoff.
Miami Dolphins (6-7) vs Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6), Week 15
- Scheduled kickoff: 8:15PM EST
- Date: Monday, December 15th
- Location: Pittsburgh, PA
- Forecast: High of 20 degrees, low of 17 degrees
This game, on the surface, has the makings of a true house of horrors recipe for the Miami Dolphins. And that’s what makes this game such a pivotal moment in Miami’s bounce back this season. Because as impressive as the win against the Buffalo Bills was, this is the game in which the Dolphins can prove they’re ready to push some of these narratives behind them and build a better resume for McDaniel to earn more belief in his resume moving forward from ownership and the fanbase.

The Steelers, like Miami, are an imperfect team. But the Dolphins have routinely found ways to lose games in just one of these elements, let alone all of them stacked together. And the ultimately irony for Miami is that they’re playing the Steelers — where former Dolphins defender Jalen Ramsey new resides. Where former Dolphin safety DeShon Elliott is under contract (he’s out for the season). Ramsey and the Dolphins endured a very visible and contentious split this offseason due to unverified friction behind the scenes. Elliott could not bash the Dolphins fast enough this offseason when asked about the culture in Miami this summer. So what are the Dolphins going to do on Monday night? Will they reaffirm everyone’s priors? Or will they finally do something about it, just as they did when they finally generated a breakthrough win against the Bills?

If it’s the former, expect a lot of frustration from the fanbase. The team’s shortcomings have unfortunately fueled these narratives to be as well publicized as they are now.
But if it’s the latter? Well, then things are going to get very, very interesting over the season’s final few weeks.
