Rangers sign Edwin Diaz’s All-Star brother to free agent contract

Rangers sign Edwin Diaz's All-Star brother to free agent contract - Yahoo Sports

The Texas Rangers have signed a former All Star who is the brother of one of this offseason’s big free agent moves.

No, they didn’t get Edwin Diaz. They got his brother Alexis in a deal reporter by ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Friday night.

Alexis is a 29-year old righty who as recently as 2023 was an All-Star closer for the Cincinnati Reds.

He made his MLB debut in 2022 and had a 1.84 ERA in 59 games.

The next season, he saved 37 games, and in 2024, he saved 28 and still had a 3.99 ERA.

The rails fell off quickly in 2025.

Alexis Diaz had a 12.00 ERA in six outings with the Reds before they let him go.

The Dodgers pick him up next, and he had a 5.00 ERA in nine games there before they too let him go.

The Atlanta Braves gave Diaz a quick chance down the stretch, and he had a 10.13 ERA in three outings.

Now, the Rangers are next.

It seems like multiple teams have viewed Alexis Diaz as a worthy reclamation project. His stuff was really good as recently as a couple seasons ago.

Relievers are volatile, and some never get back to their form.

But if the Rangers get Alexis Diaz back to his 2022-23 level, it’ll be a huge steal to get him now in free agency.
