But the Red Sox had to trade catching prospect Kyle Teel to acquire Crochet. Teel burst onto the scene with the Chicago White Sox this season, but he could be on the move.
Red Sox insiders Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo recently reported that the Red Sox were eyeing a trade for Teel at the winter meetings this offseason.

“A year ago at the Winter Meetings, the Red Sox parted with catching prospect Kyle Teel as the centerpiece of the blockbuster trade that netted them ace Garrett Crochet,” McAdam and Cotillo wrote. “In an ironic twist, Teel is once again a trade candidate this winter after debuting in 2025 — and the Red Sox have shown at least some interest in bringing him back.”
Teel would be a huge addition for the Red Sox this winter. He had a huge year with the White Sox, posting an .886 OPS in Triple-A before hitting .273 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs in 78 big league games.
It would likely be a very expensive trade for the Red Sox to pull off, considering how much talent he flashed in his age-23 season. The Red Sox shouldn’t have traded him in the first place, and they could fix this mistake by acquiring him in a shocking trade this winter.
