Sonny Gray recently waived his no-trade clause in order to be traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Boston Red Sox. Despite posting solid numbers over two seasons in St. Louis, at age 36, Gray just didn’t fit their rebuilding timeline.

In two seasons with the Cardinals, Gray earned 27 wins with a 4.07 ERA. Last year Gray reached a career high 5.29 SO/BB ratio.

Now, embracing his new team and his role as a member of the Red Sox, Gray opened up about his time with their biggest rival, the New York Yankees. When speaking to the media, he had this to say about his stint in the Bronx: “I never wanted to go there in the first place.”

Gray also cited that New York just wasn’t a great fit for his family, in addition to the displeasure of being uprooted in a midseason trade.

In 41 games with the Yankees, Gray posted a 15-16 record and a 4.51 ERA, the highest mark of any team he’s played with. In addition to St. Louis and New York, Gray has pitched for the Oakland Athletics, Cincinnati Reds and the Minnesota Twins, where he finished second in American League Cy Young award voting in 2023.

Returning to the American League East, Gray will spend plenty of time back in the Bronx, this time as an opponent.

Heading into the 2026 season, Yankees fans certainly won’t forget Gray’s comments, adding even more fuel to one of the most infamous rivalries in all of sports.
