New York Yankees Should Absolutely Trade These 3 Players

The New York Yankees definitely need to make some changes this offseason, and considering they don’t spend quite as much money as they used to in free agency, they may have to pursue some trades in order to truly bolster their roster.

Luckily, the Yankees have a farm system teeming with young arms and some intriguing bats that they can put together in potential trade packages for star players. They also have a few players already on the big-league roster that they could move.

Here are three players New York should absolutely consider trading this winter.

Jasson Dominguez was something of an urban legend in the minor leagues. He was hailed as a five-tool player, was nicknamed “The Martian” and was even likened to Mickey Mantle.

But during his first full season in 2025, Dominguez was largely underwhelming.

The 22-year-old slashed .257/.331/.388 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI over 429 plate appearances and was benched during the second half of the season.

Not only was Dominguez’s offensive output disappointing, but he was an absolute nightmare in left field, and let’s keep in mind that the Dominican native was initially labeled a terrific defender when he was first coming up through the Yankees’ system as a center fielder.

It seems pretty obvious now that Dominguez will not be playing center field at any point in New York, and if New York re-signs Cody Bellinger or lands Kyle Tucker, there will be no room for him in the Yanks’ starting outfield at all in 2026.

Because Dominguez is very young, he still has plenty of value, and there are surely plenty of other clubs that would be willing to try to cash in on his potential. But has his stock dropped? You bet.

With Spencer Jones also on the come-up in the Yankees’ farm system, it would be a surprise to see both young outfielders remaining in the Bronx long term unless New York completely strikes out in free agency this year.

Once one of the top pitching prospects in the Yankees’ system, Will Warren tossed his first full big-league campaign this past year and was decent, logging a 4.44 ERA while registering 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

However, there are some concerns with Warren.

For starters, he is already 26 years old, so it makes you wonder just how much more room he has to actually grow. His 2.63 K/BB ratio in 2025 was also rather uninspiring, and it seemed pretty evident that the right-hander struggled against top-tier opponents.

In fact, Warren was left off New York’s postseason rotation, with Luis Gil — who labored himself in 2025 — getting the nod over him.

Once Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon return in early 2026, Warren may not have a spot in the Yankees’ rotation with Max Friend, Cam Schlittler and Gil also included.

Taking all of that into consideration, it makes sense to trade Warren now, potentially in a deal for another frontline starter like Sandy Alcantara, Freddy Peralta, Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez or possibly even Tarik Skubal.

Warren is under team control through 2030 and has terrific stuff, so he should definitely present a rather enticing trade target for clubs around baseball, but will he ever be the top-of-the-line hurler the Yankees had hoped he would become when he was in their system? It seems unlikely.

Might as well package Warren in a trade now while he still has legitimate value.

You know, I find it rather strange how Austin Wells has escaped the same flak that befell Anthony Volpe during the 2025 campaign.

Yes, Volpe was miserable at the plate for much of the season, but Wells’ numbers were actually very similar, as he slashed .219/.275/.436. Since entering the big leagues in 2023, Wells owns a .224/.294/.423 slash line, so why has he been evading similar criticism?

Perhaps it’s because Wells is a fine defensive catcher who calls a good game, but we tend to forget that Volpe was an elite defensive shortstop before suffering his torn labrum this past year.

So, why should the Yankees trade Wells?

Keep in mind that first baseman Ben Rice was a backstop in the minor leagues and caught 36 games in 2025 while registering an .836 OPS on the campaign as a whole.

New York could jettison Wells, move Rice behind the plate and then go out and land a big bat at first base, which would give the Bronx Bombers one heck of a lineup.

I understand that Wells is far superior to Rice as a defender, but how much longer can the Yankees live with his anemic bat the bottom of the order?

It probably won’t happen because New York seems to love Wells, who is under club control through 2029, but the Yankees should absolutely consider it.
