Shanahan said Christian McCaffrey “needed” the extra rest with the 49ers playing the Monday night game, which is why McCaffrey didn’t practice this week.
As for Eric Kendricks, the 49ers have been in communication with him throughout the season:
“We’ve been talking with him throughout the year. I know he had other options throughout the year. But the timing was right for him. And we’ve been wanting him on board, so we were pumped that he wanted to come.”
Shanahan said, “It’s all good” now, despite Kendricks’ backing out of the initial deal he had with the 49ers in March 2024, saying, “I understand why he did it.”
There were no follow-ups as to what Kendrick’s role would be on Sunday. If the Niners have been in talks with him all year, you have to imagine a veteran like that isn’t coming back to play special teams.

As for the weather, Shanahan said there will be a built-in adjustment for it, as well as the Browns’ defense. Here is a look at footage from Cleveland as of Friday morning:
Referencing the last time the 49ers went to Cleveland in 2023, Shanahan said the Browns probably have a better defense this time around, and he expects the rain to be worse: “We gotta prepare for it. It’s like that this time of the year. Hopefully, we’ll get lucky with the weather, but we’re assuming the worst.” Shanahan is expecting rain and wind.
