New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was asked to respond to comments made by New York Giants’ two-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Brian Burns when speaking with media members.
Burns acknowledged Maye’s talent at quarterback, but he also noted that the second-year signal-caller might be “too poised” in the pocket, trying to make the right play every time. He indicated that it could end up coming back to bite Maye because he isn’t always cognizant of where the pass rushers are coming from.
Maye admitted that he wasn’t exactly sure what Burns meant by the comment, while also acknowledging that he’s a great player.
“Not 100% [sure] what that really means,” said Maye. “I try to keep my eyes down the field with feeling pressure, I think that’s part of playing the position. Just trying to make the right play. I know he’s a great player, and he’s had a great year, so just try to have a feel of where he’s at. I know he’s made a lot of plays.”
Maye will have extra pressure on him for Monday’s game against the Giants with left tackle Will Campbell and likely left guard Jared Wilson both out for the game.
That could create opportunities for Burns to get into the offensive backfield and wreak havoc. The young quarterback will need to keep his head on a swivel at all times against a Giants team that isn’t as bad as their 2-10 record indicates.
