Ex-Astros star Alex Bregman predicted to make seemingly easy Red Sox decision

The Houston Astros have been one of the better teams in baseball over the past decade, and had the Los Angeles Dodgers not won the World Series in 2025, there could’ve been a strong argument to be made that they were the best-run organization in baseball.

Unfortunately, that’s also been with Jim Crane not doing enough for the Astros as an owner, allowing some of his top players to walk multiple times.

One of the latest to do so was Alex Bregman a season ago, and he enjoyed some success with the Boston Red Sox.

Bregman played only 114 games due to an injury, but when he was on the field, there was an argument to be made that it was the best baseball Bregman played in a couple of years.

It doesn’t seem likely that a reunion with the Astros will happen, and when predicting where he could land as a free agent again, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently predicted that he’d take a deal with the Red Sox.

“Like the Yankees, the Boston Red Sox are looking to bring back a high-profile player who was just added a year ago. Third baseman Alex Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with Boston in February, but, as expected, he opted-out at the start of the offseason. According to Passan, the Red Sox would like to have him back but will face stiff competition on the open market… With Bregman set to command a massive salary, there would be some logic in letting Mayer take over third while chasing another star free agent.

“As Hall of Famer David Ortiz noted, though, the value of Bregman’s leadership can’t be overlooked… Prediction: Boston re-signs Bregman,” he wrote.

With the Red Sox looking to compete in 2026 and beyond, especially with some of the young talent they have on both sides of the baseball, returning someone like Bregman seems to make a lot of sense.
