The Boston Red Sox made a move that was rather expected, but it only got reported this weekend.

Matt Eddy of Baseball America reported that the Red Sox have released catcher Yasmani Grandal.
Grandal was twice an All Star but had mostly reached the end of the line here.
He stepped away from Boston’s organization in June, as if to retire, although there’s been no formal retirement announcement.
At the time, Grandal’s Triple-A manager Chad Tracy said that Grandal told him, “It’s time to be dad.”
Grandal last played at the MLB level in 2024 for the Pirates, for whom he hit nine home runs and slugged .400.
He was originally a first-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds, but he didn’t make his MLB debut until he was traded to the Padres for Mat Latos.

He was then in the Matt Kemp trade with the Dodgers and hit 73 homers in L.A.
Grandal went from there to the Brewers, for whom he hit 28 home runs.
Then it was a big contract with the White Sox before 2024 with the Pirates.
Grandal signed with the Red Sox for 2025 with a chance to get called up but never was before he stepped away from baseball, potentially for good.
