White Sox Features: Songs of the (off) Season, Part 2

When the famed first Elvis Presley Christmas Album came out in October 1957, White Sox fans already had plenty to cheer about. The team had just finished its seventh straight winning season, part of a streak that would continue for another decade. The 90-win total wasn’t enough to challenge the dreaded Yankees, but the Sox were only two years away from their more-or-less every half-century World Series trip. Nellie Fox had almost as high a bWAR (7.9) as the entire 2025 team’s position players (8.7), and Minnie Miñoso wasn’t far behind. Fox led the league in hits, Luis Aparicio wore the stolen base crown. Billy Pierce led the AL with 20 wins and he and teammate Dick Donovan tied for the most complete games with 16, one more each than any entire Sox rotation has had since Chris Sale was traded nine years ago.

This year is a very different story, of course, so our songs of the season are not quite as cheery — though the most famous from Elvis’ album was already a tad on the sad side.

We’ll have a blue Christmas as Sox fans
Blue ’cause they have few plans
The defense bleeds red and the pitching staff’s green
The hitting’s as weak as has ever been seen

And when those blue snowflakes start falling
Thoughts of great years long past may start calling
You’ll be doing all right
Because your Sox aren’t white
But we’ll have a blue, blue, blue, blue Christmas.

And:

Santa bring my Sox team back to me
Santa bring my Sox team back to me

I don’t need a lot of presents
To make my Christmas bright
I just need a team like in ’57
And I’d be rolling in Sox fan heaven
Santa bring my Sox team back to me
(Santa bring my Sox team back to me)

The Christmas tree is ready
The candles all aglow
But we’ve no Nellie Fox now
No Minnie Miñoso
Santa bring my Sox team back to me
(Santa bring a decent team back to me)

And there’s:

I’m dreaming tonight of a team I love
Even more than I usually do
And although we all know it’s a long road back
In my dreams the losses are few.

They’ll touch home for Christmas
Score a run or three
The record will grow to at least so-so
An end to ignominy

Christmas Eve will find me
Rooting for better teams
They’ll touch home for Christmas
If only in my dreams.

Of course, there’s:

Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, flying to The Rate
Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeers heading for the gate
Bells are ringing, Sox fans singing, all is merry and bright
’Cause Santa’s no dope, knows we all hope he’ll be bringing new owners tonight.

Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right on down the Ryan
He’s got a sack that’ll bring the team back, or at least he’s tryin’
Hear those sleigh bells jingle, jingle, oh what a beautiful sight,
So rein in dread, think wins instead, ‘cause Santa Claus comes tonight.

And finally, for our purposes:

I’m dreaming of a White Soxmas
Just like the ones I used to know
When the pitching glistened and Sox fans listened
To many great seasons in a row

I’m dreaming of White Soxmas
With every Christmas card I write
May all the games be merry and bright
And won by Sox wearing white.
