It’s obviously never a good thing when the Boston Red Sox can poach a player from the New York Yankees, especially if said player is a contributor.

The Yankees will have to factor that in this offseason, as there seems to be a lot of interest for multiple players, including Devin Williams, the closer they brought in from a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers involving Caleb Durbin and Nestor Cortez an offseason ago.
Williams didn’t throw the baseball at a high level during his time in New York, but that could change if he goes to a different organization or even re-signs in the Bronx.
His stuff was still above average, despite the base numbers, including a 4.79 ERA, not being what he was hoping for.
Red Sox have interest in Devin Williams
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox have been a team that’s shown interest, which isn’t ideal right now for New York.

“Williams is garnering widespread interest, but the Yankees have at least maintained contact with the right-hander after he spent an up-and-down 2025 season in the Bronx…
“It’s unclear how likely a reunion is with Williams, 31. In the closer market, Williams resides behind Edwin Díaz, likely in a tier with Robert Suarez. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets are among the teams that have been connected to Williams so far this offseason,” he wrote.
The Red Sox have proven over the past year that they’re looking to compete for a World Series as soon as 2026.
2025 was a rather impressive year for Boston, and that’s without factoring in how poorly it played for some of the first half and the injuries it dealt with.

If the Red Sox are healthy going into next year and can stay healthy, as well as add someone like Williams with Aroldis Chapman, they’d be in a good spot.
