UPDATE: Brewers All-Star Closer Could Be Headed Out Of Town For Young Gun

The Milwaukee Brewers are making waves in the trade rumor mill this offseason, and it’s anyone’s guess where they’ll land. Coming off a solid 93-win season in 2024, they face an interesting crossroads.

Brewers Decline All-Star Closer's Club Option; Could Trade Be On Horizon? - Newsweek

One path could see the Brewers sticking with their core group, perhaps adding a piece here or there to make another postseason run. On the flip side, they might choose to shake things up a bit, potentially trading for young, MLB-ready talent on team-friendly deals or restocking their farm system with promising prospects.

One name that’s cropping up a lot in these discussions is none other than star closer Devin Williams.

A two-time All-Star, Williams boasts a jaw-dropping career ERA of 1.83 over his first six years in the big leagues. In short, any playoff contender with bullpen needs would be thrilled to add his arm to their roster.

Deesha Thosar from Fox Sports has tossed an intriguing suggestion into the ring: why not put a call into the Baltimore Orioles about Coby Mayo?

The idea here is that the Brewers, by trading Williams—who’s eyeing free agency next offseason and isn’t expected to be extended by Milwaukee—could score a hefty return.

Mayo, the Orioles’ standout third base prospect, is hitting major league radars despite being slightly overshadowed by Baltimore’s crowded infield crop.

Baltimore’s farm system is tops in the league, and Mayo’s potential only adds to that prestige. During the 2024 minor league season, he turned heads with a .293/.372/.592 slash line, belting 25 homers and driving in 73 runs over 93 games.

If Milwaukee can swing a deal to bring Mayo on board, it could be a game-changer for their lineup.

While nothing is set in stone, these trade musings have certainly added an extra layer of intrigue to the Brewers’ offseason strategy.

With or without Williams, it’s clear Milwaukee has some big decisions looming as they look to build on their success and keep the fans in Milwaukee dreaming big.
