Jets CB Kris Boyd Hospitalized After Manhattan Shooting, Reportedly in Critical Condition
New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd is reportedly in critical condition after being shot early Saturday morning in Midtown Manhattan. According to multiple reports, Boyd sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was rushed to the hospital, where he remains under medical care.
The Jets released a brief statement on the matter, saying, “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time.” No further details have been made public regarding the circumstances of the shooting.
Boyd, who joined the Jets this offseason as a free agent, has yet to take the field for the team this year. He’s been on injured reserve since before the start of the 2025 campaign. This was expected to be a fresh chapter in his career after a seven-year NFL journey that’s taken him from Minnesota to Arizona, Houston, and now New York.
Before turning pro, Boyd built a reputation as a physical, high-motor cornerback at the University of Texas. A four-star recruit out of Gilmer High School in Texas, he arrived in Austin with high expectations and delivered on them. Boyd played in 51 games for the Longhorns, starting 33, and was a cornerstone of the secondary during his time on campus.
His senior year in 2018 was his breakout season. Boyd led the team with 16 pass breakups, ranked fifth in total tackles with 67, and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors from both the league’s coaches and the Associated Press. He was also named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation’s top defensive back-a testament to the impact he had on the field that season.
Boyd entered the NFL in 2019 when the Minnesota Vikings selected him in the seventh round of the draft, 217th overall. While he wasn’t a full-time starter, he carved out a role as a reliable depth piece and special teams contributor.
Over his career, he’s appeared in 81 games, starting six. His most recent full season came with the Houston Texans in 2024, where he played in all 17 games.
This latest development is a troubling turn for a player who’s battled through the ups and downs of a professional football career and was looking to make his mark with a new team. As of now, the focus remains on his recovery, and the football world is hoping for the best.
