The San Francisco 49ers will take on the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at State Farm Stadium in a division matchup that could result in Kyle Shanahan’s squad sweeping the season series against Jonathan Gannon’s.
On Saturday, San Francisco announced a trio of roster moves, as they waived quarterback Adrian Martinez, promoted defensive end Clelin Ferrell from the practice squad and elevated cornerback Eli Apple from the practice squad.

Martinez, 25, has spent the last six weeks on the active roster with Brock Purdy sidelined due to injury, and with Purdy returning, it makes sense that the 49ers are willing to open up the roster spot for another position. However, there’s a strong chance that the quarterback returns on the practice squad if he passes through waivers.
Ferrell, 28, joined San Francisco’s practice squad two weeks ago and has been elevated for the last two games, recording four tackles and a sack. While the 49ers could’ve waited one more week and used his final elevation, they’ve decided to bring him up.
Apple, 30, failed to make the team out of camp and joined the practice squad soon after. The former first-round pick has appeared in one game for the 49ers this season (Week 4 against Jacksonville) and played three special-teams snaps. With Deommodore Lenoir’s status in question, Apple might have to play this week either on defense or on special teams so that someone else can focus more on their defensive duties.
