Chiefs post-bye updates hint at key injury, lineup shakeup and WR twist

The Kansas City Chiefs have returned from some time away in Week 10, and with them comes an influx of updates. The Chiefs are preparing to make an important road trip to face the Denver Broncos, who hold a two-game edge in the AFC West, and are dealing with a number of injuries and questions coming out of the bye week.

Beyond that, there was also a bit of (former) player movement to note for Chiefs Kingdom, so here’s all the latest updates for fans who were on a bye week of their own.

Mecole finds a new home

Mecole Hardman might have run out of chances with the Chiefs after several years and multiple stints with the team, but he continues to garner looks from other winning franchises. The latest chapter in Hardman’s career is sending him to Buffalo, as the Bills have signed the receiver/returner to their practice squad, per ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler.

For those who think that Hardman’s usefulness might have run out, however, Buffalo might have a good idea of how to give him time on the active roster. Rumors of returner Brandon Codrington’s demise have swirled for a few weeks since he’s been a healthy scratch on game days. Hardman has seven years of experience there, as well as a few Super Bowl runs.

The Chiefs have been known to bring back Hardman a time or two, but after his release from the Green Bay Packers in September, he’s remained a free agent. Now Hardman will hope to stick with the Bills for the stretch run and help a longtime rival make a run of its own.

Easing in Josh Simmons

Andy Reid opened up the week following the team’s bye by addressing the status of Josh Simmons. The team’s left tackle has missed the last four games while dealing with a personal matter, and a timeline for his expected return to the field was never provided. However, Simmons reported back to Arrowhead following the Chiefs’ Week 9 loss to Buffalo and is back with the team.

Chiefs players are getting back from the bye, so Reid admitted that he’s not exactly sure what the plan will be for Simmons and his replacement, Jaylon Moore, going forward. “I think what we’ll do is just see where we’re at here, and we know we’ve got a good player in there now, and we know what Josh is capable of and all that. So we’ll just see where we’re at when they get back,” said Reid.

While K.C. hopes he’ll be back at his post soon enough, the Chiefs have taken a patient approach with their first-round rookie off the field and it looks like they’ll maintain that posture as he gets back for the second half of the year.

Isiah Pacheco’s remains out?

When Isiah Pacheco first suffered an MCL sprain, it was unclear when exactly he would be able to return. The Chiefs designated him as “week to week” at the time, but even after having a bye to rest, Reid still isn’t sure that he’s going to be ready for the Broncos. On Monday, Reid simply stated “we’ll have to see” when asked about Pacheco’s availability for Sunday’s game.

If Pacheco is unable to go, the Chiefs will once again lean on Kareem Hunt in more of a lead back role to go with Brashard Smith. That could signal an opportunity for Elijah Mitchell, who has been banished to the team’s inactives list all season, but the Chiefs surprisingly turned to Clyde Edwards-Helaire one week ago.

Pacheco has 78 carries for 329 rushing yards so far this season.

Broncos sign former Chiefs lineman

The Broncos have been signing some interesting players lately in an effort to bolster the team for the stretch run—most notably the oldest tight end in the league. The latest is a familiar face to Chiefs Kingdom, as former K.C. offensive lineman Geron Christian has joined Denver’s practice squad.

The Chiefs signed Christian to a one-year deal in free agency in ’22, and he spent the majority of the season with the team before being released in January. Christian played 10 games with K.C., all on special teams, and served as potential emergency help at tackle for most of the team’s championship run.

Christian was most recently with the Dallas Cowboys before signing with the Broncos.
