The Boston Red Sox have frustrated their fanbase for years since winning the 2018 World Series.

Despite being in one of the biggest markets with some of the deepest pockets, this franchise has consistently raised fans’ hopes each offseason only to let them down by acting like it can’t afford to field a winning ballclub.

This is why the team’s aggressive pursuit of superstar free-agent outfielder Juan Soto has been such a surprise this offseason, and franchise icon David Ortiz recently shared his thoughts on the situation.

On a recent episode of the “Fenway Rundown” podcast, Ortiz said “The one thing that makes me so optimistic is the way the Red Sox are trying to approach him. I mean, the Red Sox are really trying to get this kid. And that motivated me to even go and talk to him and do whatever it takes for him to become a Red Sox.”

The Red Sox reportedly met with Soto recently, but Ortiz was unable to attend because his father is reportedly experiencing some health issues.

However, Ortiz lives close to Soto in the Dominican Republic and has been recruiting him on his own time.

Soto isn’t the best fit for the Red Sox on paper, as the team already skews heavily left-handed and is projected to get even more lefty-dominant once their top prospects reach the big leagues soon.

However, landing a star of this magnitude would go a long way toward restoring faith with a fanbase that is still feeling the effects of trading Mookie Betts years ago.

Prying Soto away from the New York Yankees would reignite the sport’s best rivalry.
