⚾ LEGEND’S NEXT CHAPTER: Yankees icon Don Mattingly has announced a major career decision that’s sending waves through the baseball world. After decades shaping the game both on the field and in the dugout, “Donnie Baseball” is stepping into a new phase — one defined by leadership, mentorship, and legacy. Fans across generations are flooding social media with tributes, calling him not just a Yankee legend, but the very heart of New York baseball.

Don Mattingly will not be on the Blue Jays bench in 2026.

The dream of Don Mattingly winning his first World Series in pinstripes is officially back on for fans of the New York Yankees.

The first baseman reportedly announced he was parting ways with the Toronto Blue Jays after he and the Jays fell a single win shy of the title in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mattingly, of course, spent his entire 1,785-game playing career with the Yankees but only reached the postseason once, in 1995 when the Yankees fell in five games in the American League Division Series to the Seattle Mariners.

He has been a coach and manager for the Yankees, Blue Jays, Dodgers and Miami Marlins since 2004, including a four-season stint as Yankees bench coach under Joe Torre from 2004-07. He was the 2020 National League Manager of the Year with Miami.

Don Mattingly’s Contract With The Blue Jays Expired After The World Series

Mattingly had been the Blue Jays bench coach since 2022, when Toronto manager John Schneider hired him to be his right-hand man after Toronto general manager Ross Atkins hired Schneider to replace Charlie Montoyo midseason that year.

But Mattingly’s contract expired, and he said he wanted to take a step back from the grind of spending every day on the road and away from his family.

“Kind of had a pretty good feeling that this was going to be my last year in Toronto,” Mattingly told MLB.com on Thursday. “When I went to Toronto, when Ross called me, I was thrilled. I had a great time there.”

The run to the Fall Classic was Mattingly’s first World Series appearance as a player, coach or manager, and he once again came painfully close to that ever-elusive first championship.

Still, Mattingly expressed his appreciation for his time in Toronto.

“The organization’s been tremendous. The fans there are tremendous,” Mattingly said. “It’s been a great run, but I thought before the year started, that I felt like this was kind of the end with Toronto, and really nothing more than that. Just felt like it was the right time.”

Mattingly’s son Preston is the general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. But he has a 10-year-old son, Louis, with his second wife Lori that he wants to see grow up.

“I think the thing I wrestle with is trying to balance family with a 10-year-old, trying to balance that with still loving doing what I’m doing, and then balancing the road,” Mattingly said. “I’m 64, I feel good, but the road kind of wears you down.”

Don Mattingly Is Not Retiring

Mattingly made it clear he was not done with baseball, even though he is approaching retirement age. According to MLB.com, Mattingly did not rule out a return to the Yankees coaching staff, even though he wants to enjoy his time away from the game.

“If I talked about it right now, the last thing I want to do is be on the road,” Mattingly said. “But you never know how you feel a month from now, or whatever.

“At this point I just want to chill and figure out what I want to do.”
