Blake Sabol was released on Wednesday by the Chicago White Sox following a season that began in Boston.

The Red Sox called on Sabol to serve as the backup catcher while Connor Wong was on the injured list with a fractured pinky at the beginning of the season.

Sabol was acquired from the San Francisco Giants in January after he was designated for assignment, with the Red Sox gave up international bonus pool space to acquire him. Sabol played in eight games for the Red Sox in Wong’s absence.

He was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on June 1, but sent outright to Triple-A on June 5.

Sabol kept playing for Worcester until he was traded to the White Sox on July 12 after slashing .167/.281/.299 in 43 games. The White Sox assigned him to Triple-A Charlotte, where he spent the rest of the season, hitting .216 in 23 games.

Sabol made his big league debut in 2023 with the Giants, playing 121 games across two seasons. He hit 13 home runs in 110 games his rookie year, and could still contribute as a depth piece or injury replacement for a big league club.

Sabol may be able to find a team willing to give him a minor league contract. He has not had much success in the big leagues yet, but an injury or strong play in Triple-A could open the door for him to get another chance.
