“Unexpected Shake-Up: Yankees make two major roster decisions after ALDS exit to the Blue Jays and the ripple effects could reshape their off-season strategy”

The New York Yankees suffered an early exit in the MLB playoffs this year. After a thrilling victory in the AL wild card round against the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees’ pitching staff collapsed against the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS. New York dropped the series in four games, extending its championship drought to 16 seasons.

As the Yankees enter another pivotal offseason, many of the team’s players will be entering free agency, and there will be several crucial decisions to make regarding roster construction. Most notably, the bullpen will feature multiple free agents, including right-handers Luke Weaver and Devin Williams, both of played prominent roles for the team.

Yankees Announce Two Roster Moves After ALDS Loss to Blue Jays

While New York weighs whether to bring back Weaver or Williams or both, the team made two other bullpen decisions on Wednesday. The Yankees announced that left-handed relief pitcher Tim Hill’s club option was picked up, while Jonathan Loaisiga’s club option was declined.

“Today, the Yankees exercised their 2026 club option for LHP Tim Hill and declined their 2026 club option for RHP Jonathan Loáisiga,” the team wrote on X.

Hill’s option is worth $3 million, while Loaisiga’s would have cost $5 million. A club option allows a team to retain a player for an additional season at a predetermined salary. If declined, the player becomes a free agent unless another contract is negotiated.

Hill has been a steady presence in the Yankees’ bullpen over the past two seasons, posting a 2.68 ERA across 105 appearances. He is not a high strikeout arm, but he consistently generates weak contact and has earned the trust of manager Aaron Boone. Hill will enter his ninth MLB season in 2026 and remains one of the most reliable left-handed options in the Yankees’ relief group.

Loaisiga, meanwhile, has spent his entire eight-year career with New York. Injuries have plagued him over the past two seasons, limiting him to just three appearances in 2024. In 2025, he made 30 appearances before suffering a right elbow flexor strain that kept him out of the postseason.

He finished the year with a 4.25 ERA and 25 strikeouts over 29 2/3 innings. The Yankees likely declined Loaisiga’s option because of his injury history and declining availability. The decisions on Hill and Loaisiga mark the start of what promises to be a busy offseason in the Bronx.
